Ali Wentworth was born at the epicenter of American power. Her mother was Nancy Reagan's social secretary at the White House, and her stepfather edited one of Washington's most influential magazines. But she decided it was much more fun to wear latex wigs and scream on television than to attend state dinners.
In 1992, she joined the cast of In Living Color. She was one of the few white actresses on a sketch show dominated by the Wayans brothers' African American talent. There she shared the spotlight with a young Jim Carrey and learned that physical comedy doesn't care about social hierarchies.
That stint at Fox gave her an insider's understanding of how the industry works.
Sometimes a ridiculous name is all it takes to secure a place in television history. In 1995, she played Sheila in the episode The Soup Nazi of the series Seinfeld. Her character was Jerry's clingy girlfriend, and that nickname, Schmoopie, became a recurring catchphrase in pop culture.
It was a job that only took a few days of filming.
But the impact was so out of proportion that people still ask her about gazpacho at airports. After that success, she appeared in studio films such as Jerry Maguire in 1996 and Office Space in 1999. She never pursued the lead role outright, preferring creative control over her own scripts.
She married journalist George Stephanopoulos in 2001. The wedding took place at a Greek Orthodox cathedral in New York after a whirlwind courtship of just two months. Many tabloid analysts predicted a quick breakup due to the clash of personalities between the comedian and the political adviser.
And they were completely wrong.
Wentworth channeled her energy into nonfiction writing with a direct, unsparing style. In 2012, she published Ali in Wonderland, dissecting the miseries of the upper class with surgical precision. Her books don't seek the reader's redemption but laughter, through constant self-criticism.
In 2016, she created and starred in Nightcap. The series parodied the inner workings of late-night talk shows and featured cameos from stars playing themselves in humiliating situations. The show ran for 20 episodes before its final cancellation.
She produced the documentary Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields in 2023. The film examines the exploitation of women's images in cinema and received an Emmy Award nomination in technical categories. In 2024, she continued her regular work on the podcast Go Ask Ali under the Shondaland production banner. The monthly subscription to the distribution platform costs $6.99.
