Amanda Bynes didn't need a slow climb to fame, because she was born with a comic timing that many veterans would envy. By just seven years old she was already filming commercials, and soon after she took the stage at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles. There, Nickelodeon talent scouts discovered her.
Her arrival on All That in 1996 changed the dynamics of the kids' channel. She had a natural gift for controlled hamming and impossible facial expressions. She was the youngest actress to have her own sketch show with The Amanda Show, which stayed on the air from 1999 to 2002.
And then came the movies.
Her leap to the big screen came with Big Fat Liar in 2002, where she shared the marquee with Frankie Muniz. The industry saw in her the natural heir to the great queens of physical comedy. But Bynes wanted to prove she could carry a movie on her own without relying solely on funny faces.
In 2003, she starred in What a Girl Wants and the series What I Like About You. The latter ran for four seasons and allowed her to explore a somewhat more mature range, though still rooted in comedy. Audiences adored her because she projected a closeness that her Disney contemporaries couldn't quite match.
Her bet on teen movies paid off for a while.
Her role in She's the Man in 2006 is probably the peak of her commercial career. She dressed up as a boy to play soccer, and critics, who are usually tough on this kind of film, praised her physical commitment. It grossed 57 million dollars worldwide and made her a priority for Hollywood studios.
But exhaustion began to show signs of life after the premiere of Hairspray in 2007. Despite being part of a critical and audience hit that won several awards, her media presence became erratic.
In 2010 she filmed Easy A alongside Emma Stone. It was her last professional job in front of the cameras. Shortly before the film's release, Bynes used her social media to announce that she was retiring from acting at age 24. She said she no longer loved acting and preferred to quit while she was still on top.
That decision was not a passing impulse.
The following years were marked by legal and mental health problems that kept her away from the spotlight. She tried to train in fashion design and enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in California. In 2019 she managed to graduate in fashion product design, looking for a life away from scripts.
In 2022 the U.S. courts ended the conservatorship her mother had held over her for almost a decade. After that process, Bynes launched a podcast in 2023, which she decided to cancel after just one episode in order to focus on getting a nail technician license. Her net worth is estimated at 3 million dollars after years of professional inactivity in the entertainment industry.
