Anne Parillaud never wanted to be an actress. She studied ballet and planned to become a lawyer until chance put her in front of a camera at age 16. Her debut in Un amour de sable in 1977 was only the first step in a career she herself describes as a constant search for identity.
During her early years in the French film industry, her name was linked to that of Alain Delon. The actor and director cast her to star in Pour la peau d’un flic in 1981 and Le Battant in 1983. During that period, the French press treated her as a supporting figure overshadowed by the male myth.
That chapter ended abruptly.
Parillaud decided to break away from her image as an innocent and sought out projects that demanded real physical effort. But the true change didn't come by her own choice; it came from the obsession of Luc Besson. The director wrote a specific script for her that would transform her career and her personal life (they were married and had a daughter).
To prepare for Nikita in 1990, the actress underwent a real three-month isolation in a warehouse. Besson banned her from contact with the outside world and made her practice shooting with real firearms. He wanted her movements to be those of a wild animal trapped in a bourgeois environment.
And the gamble paid off.
The film sold more than five million tickets in France alone. Her performance as a drug addict turned state assassin broke the mold for the European action heroine. In 1991, she won the César Award for Best Actress for this role.
After her international success, she moved to the United States to try her luck in the studio system. John Landis cast her to star in Innocent Blood in 1992, where she played a French vampire in Pittsburgh. But her Hollywood experience wasn't as smooth as she had hoped, since producers wanted to repeat the formula of her earlier hit without adding anything new.
In 1998, she played Queen Anne of Austria in The Man in the Iron Mask. She shared the screen with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jeremy Irons in a blockbuster that did well at the box office but moved her away from the author-driven cinema she preferred.
Starting in 2000, her choices became more selective and daring. In 2002, she worked with Catherine Breillat on Sex Is Comedy. It was a cold shoot in which she played a film director dealing with her actors' awkwardness in a bedroom scene. The film focused on the technique and the detachment of the filmmaking craft.
Parillaud has never stopped working, but she has spaced out her appearances to focus on theater and writing.
In 2021, she published her first novel, Les déracinés. The book explores themes of identity that bear certain parallels to her own life. For her, acting has always been a way of disappearing behind characters.
In 2022, she took part in the television production L’Imposture for France 2. Her role as a mother who uncovers her son's secrets earned positive reviews for its restrained performance. Shortly afterward, she joined the cast of the Apple TV+ series The New Look in 2024, playing Coco Chanel.
Filming for this international production took place mainly on location in Paris during the second half of 2023. The contract was signed under the studio's standard confidentiality clauses in 2024.
