Benoît Jacquot found her walking down a street in Marseille in 1995.
She was only thirteen years old and had no intention of becoming an actress, but that chance encounter ended up on the set of Marie Baie des Anges. It was an abrupt entry into the industry, with no acting schools in between and no career plans drawn up in Paris offices.
The camera wanted her for that mix of aristocratic coolness and a gaze that seemed to judge the viewer from the very first close-up.
Catherine Breillat saw in her the perfect tool for dissecting female cruelty and adolescent sexuality. In 2001, she starred in À ma sœur!, and its impact at the Cannes Film Festival was immediate because of the raw nature of its approach.
That film was not trying to please anyone.
Mesquida played Elena with a frosty detachment that became her signature for years. She reunited with Breillat in Sex Is Comedy in 2002, and later appeared in Une vieille maîtresse in 2007, where she shared the screen with Asia Argento. Her career was built on provocative celebrities who resist the complacency of traditional audiences.
In the mid-2000s, she decided France was too small for her and moved to the United States. She wasn't chasing conventional red carpet stardom, but projects that kept the sense of strangeness she had brought with her from Europe.
In 2010, she worked under Gregg Araki on Kaboom, and that same year she took part in Rubber, directed by Quentin Dupieux. The latter is a cult film about a killer tire that grossed barely $100,000 at the box office during its limited North American release, yet it cemented its status in the most radical corner of independent cinema.
And then commercial television came along.
Her role as Beatrice Grimaldi on Gossip Girl between 2011 and 2012 brought her massive visibility she had never sought. She played a European princess with twisted plans, and she fit perfectly into the cynical tone of the New York production.
Mesquida has always preferred control over her public image, which led her to get involved in the technical and financial side of her projects. In 2022, she starred in Méduse by Sophie Levy, where she also played a key role in the visual atmosphere of the film.
She has no interest in flat scripts.
She took part in the series Now Apocalypse in 2019, produced by Steven Soderbergh, bringing an acting maturity that no longer relied on youthful provocation. Her residence in Los Angeles has allowed her to alternate between video art and genre productions such as Burning Shadow in 2018.
In 2022, she shot The Most Dangerous Game in a supporting role that prioritized narrative efficiency over personal showcasing. The actress made the United States her home base after her first international successes, and she balances her acting career with aesthetic consulting for luxury fashion brands. The shoot for Méduse had a budget of less than one million euros.
