Nicole LaLiberte is a face that's hard to forget. In 2017 she appeared in the third season of Twin Peaks, playing Darya. It was a cold, violent death in a motel room. That scene alongside Kyle MacLachlan showcased her ability to hold the shot without blinking.
Before making films, she spent years in front of the cameras of New York fashion photographers. Her lanky frame and icy gaze fit an industry looking for unconventional looks. But modeling was only a way to pay the rent while she looked for her place in acting.
Risk has always been his currency.
In 2011 she landed a recurring role on How to Make It in America. The HBO series captured the essence of aspirational New York, and she fit right in. She also worked with Gregg Araki on Kaboom in 2010. That film won the first Queer Palm at the Cannes Film Festival.
She tends to choose characters who live on the margins. She doesn't seek the audience's sympathy. In 2012 she starred in Girls Against Boys, exploring the rawest revenge thriller. Critics praised her coolness in front of the camera.
And the gamble paid off.
Her career doesn't follow the usual path of constant self-promotion. In 2013 she took part in In a World… under the direction of Lake Bell. The film earned nearly three million dollars on a minimal budget. It was a stylish exercise about the voice-over industry that allowed her to show a different register.
In 2023 she took part in The Curse, the Showtime series by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie. Her presence in auteur projects reflects a selective approach that steers clear of mass commercial circuits. She prefers shoots where the director has the final say.
Her classical dance training shapes how she moves within the frame. Every gesture is calculated to convey a lurking unease. So it's no surprise that directors with such powerful visual worlds keep calling on her.
She never chased easy applause.
The production of The Curse used 35mm cameras to achieve that specific grainy texture in the exterior scenes.
