A shoulder injury at Brown University ended his career in professional basketball. Nick Chinlund had to make a living outside the court and ended up in New York, studying acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute.
In the late 1980s, he began landing one small television role after another. But his name started to gain real traction with casting directors in 1995.
That year, he played Donnie Pfaster on the series The X-Files. He was a fetish collector who terrified audiences because he wasn't an outer-space monster. He was an ordinary man with murderous instincts.
And the gamble paid off.
He reprised the role five years later in the same series. By then he had become known for playing tough guys, criminals with icy stares, and characters who tend to die before the final credits.
In 1997, he joined the cast of Con Air alongside Nicolas Cage and John Malkovich. He played Billy Bedlam, a dangerous inmate who meets a violent end aboard a maximum-security prison plane.
Chinlund delivered one of the most physical performances of his career during that shoot in Las Vegas.
Hollywood quickly typecast him as an action star. Between 2003 and 2004, he appeared in big-budget productions such as Tears of the Sun and The Chronicles of Riddick. In the latter, he played Toombs, a mercenary who hunted the character of Vin Diesel across the galaxy.
But Chinlund didn't limit himself to explosions and car chases.
In 2005, he worked under Martin Campbell on The Legend of Zorro. The New York-born actor has always preferred to keep a low profile off set. He stays away from the tabloid spotlight and rarely gives interviews that aren't strictly about his work in front of the camera.
Television has been his most steady home over the last few decades. He has appeared in nearly every hit franchise, from Law & Order to CSI and Desperate Housewives.
His ability to adapt to the times shows in his work on digital platforms. In 2022, he played a U.S. Navy admiral in the series The Terminal List for Amazon Prime Video.
He landed the role after a brief audition process in which his physical presence once again proved decisive.
He doesn't seek absolute stardom. He prefers to be the actor who holds a scene from the background.
In 2023, he appeared in several episodes of the comedy Young Sheldon, playing Mayor Lundy. The filming of these scenes took place at the Warner Bros. studios in Burbank under a standard industry contract.
