Brian Warner soon understood that to survive in the entertainment industry he needed a disguise capable of devouring the man. In 1997, David Lynch gave him his first real break in film with Lost Highway. It was not a long role, but it helped validate an aesthetic that already scared deep America.
His screen presence has always relied on that deathly pallor and a gaze that seems to process reality at a different speed. Unlike other musicians who jump into film purely for ego, Warner sought out projects where his deliberately ugly look added a bit of grit to the frame.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1999 he appeared in Jawbreaker and shortly after in Party Monster (2003). In the latter film he played Christina Superstar, a role that forced him out of his gothic comfort zone and into the frenzy of New York City clubs in the nineties. The film's budget barely reached five million dollars.
Television gave him, in 2014, the role that truly proved he could carry a dramatic arc without relying on his usual makeup. In the seventh season of Sons of Anarchy, he brought to life Ron Tully, a neo-Nazi leader inside prison. But he did it with a restraint nobody expected from a guy who, years earlier, used to cut himself on stage.
Warner dropped his rock-star mannerisms and spoke with a calm that was far scarier than his screams. Because the actor knew that on the small screen, less is always more.
Years later came his appearances in American Gods and The New Pope (2020). In Paolo Sorrentino's series, he played himself in a scene alongside John Malkovich. It was a moment of meta-fiction in which Manson's character was revealed as a cultural relic tired of its own fame.
Everything went wrong in 2021.
Allegations of physical and sexual abuse brought by Evan Rachel Wood and other women brought his professional career to a halt. Talent agencies cut ties, and his role in the series American Gods was cut from the final edit swiftly. The man disappeared behind the walls of his mansion while California courts piled up folders of testimony against him.
The silence lasted three years. In 2024, Warner began a comeback to the stage with a much more sober image and a clearly visible weight loss. But the film industry is no longer the same place that welcomed him in the nineties, and caution is the general rule when it comes to his name.
His strategy now is total control over his visual production. He no longer seeks the favor of the major Los Angeles studios. Instead, he focuses on creating music videos that work like psychological horror short films, directed by names such as Bill Yukich.
The industry continues to watch his moves warily.
In August 2024, he launched a U.S. tour with Five Finger Death Punch. Tickets for the opening show in Albuquerque sold out weeks before the event. The contract for his new record distribution deal with Nuclear Blast was signed under strict confidentiality clauses that protect the company against any new legal setbacks for the artist.
