Audrey Landers arrived at the Southfork ranch with a suitcase full of ambition and a contract that barely covered a few episodes.
She was 1981. Her character, Afton Cooper, was meant to be a simple distraction in the plotlines of Dallas, but audiences reacted unexpectedly to that mix of vulnerability and silky voice. She stayed for eight seasons.
Television at the time demanded very specific types. Landers fit the blonde California beauty standard, although her training came from New York theater and the daytime soap operas of the East Coast. Before filming on the Ewing set, she had already appeared in The Secret Storm and Somerset.
Music always came first in her contract.
While American viewers followed her ups and downs with Cliff Barnes, her career took a different turn in Europe. In 1983, she released the single Manuel Goodbye, and it was an instant smash hit.
She hit number one on the charts in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. What's surprising is that many of her co-stars on the set of Dallas had no idea she was a pop star who filled arenas across the Old Continent. She earned ten gold and platinum records without making much noise in her own country.
She recorded more than a dozen albums during the 1980s and 1990s. She was constantly touring Central Europe, where audiences appreciated her ability to write her own songs, something rare for actresses who made the leap to the mic purely as a marketing move.
In 1985, she had the chance to prove her talent on the big screen with the film adaptation of A Chorus Line, directed by Richard Attenborough. She played Val, the dancer who sang about the benefits of cosmetic surgery in the number Dance: Ten; Looks: Three. It was her big moment on the silver screen.
But Hollywood is a strange place, and film offers never matched the financial stability that television and the German music industry provided.
In the mid-nineties she realized that creative control was the only way to stay in the picture. She founded Landers Productions with her mother Ruth and her sister Judy to create her own content and avoid depending on casting directors.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1995, they launched The Huggabug Club, an educational show for children where she wrote all the songs and supervised the scripts. The program stayed on the air for years on American public television and helped her build a solid legacy far from the spotlight of major releases.
Landers never stopped working. In 2013, she reprised her role as Afton Cooper in the TNT-produced revival of Dallas, bringing closure to her story with the Ewing clan. It was a well-executed exercise in nostalgia.
In 2022, she recorded the Christmas movie Cloudy with a Chance of Christmas, and in 2023 she joined the cast of the daily soap The Bold and the Beautiful. She still manages her personal brand from Florida, where she usually lives.
Her music catalog tops 600 registered songs under her name.
