The Messenger Who Didn't Want to Be an Actor

Richard Jaeckel was delivering mail at the 20th Century Fox studios when a producer noticed his square jaw. He was seventeen and had no intention of ever standing in front of a camera, but his clean-cut Marine look was exactly what the studio was looking for in 1943.

He made his debut in Guadalcanal Diary without attending any acting school.

That first foray defined his professional profile, as Jaeckel specialized in playing the tough guy who was always there. He was never the top-billed star (that spot belonged to John Wayne or Burt Lancaster), but his presence guaranteed a reliability that few supporting actors could match in postwar Hollywood.

During the 1950s he churned out Westerns and war films at an almost industrial pace. He worked under directors such as Robert Aldrich in Attack! and proved he could hold his own opposite any leading man.

In 1967 he landed a role in The Dirty Dozen, playing Sergeant Bowren. It was a chaotic production full of high-testosterone tough guys, but Jaeckel made his character stand out with a grounded restraint amid all the scripted chaos.

The Choking Scene That Earned an Oscar Nod

Paul Newman cast him in Sometimes a Great Notion in 1971 and gave him the role of a lifetime. The scene where his character drowns under a log while Newman tries to save him is pure physical realism, shot with barely any camera tricks.

The Academy recognized his effort with an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor that year.

He lost the Oscar to Ben Johnson for his work in The Last Picture Show.

That recognition did not change his status as a premium supporting actor. He kept taking roles in television and low-budget films because he needed to pay the bills for a family that had been settled in California for decades. And he did it without complaining about the quality of the scripts that landed on his desk.

A Refuge on the Small Screen

In the 1980s his face became familiar to a new generation thanks to appearances in Little House on the Prairie and The Love Boat. These were purely work-for-hire jobs, but Jaeckel approached them with the same discipline as his major works of the 1960s.

He appeared in the pilot of Baywatch in 1989, playing veteran lifeguard Ben Edwards.

And he did it with the dignity of someone who has shared the screen with some of the biggest names of the twentieth century.

His final years were marked by health problems and mounting debts that forced him to seek help from the actors' union's charity fund. He died on June 14, 1997 at a residence for industry veterans in Woodland Hills, from skin cancer.

His legacy includes 189 credits in live-action productions.
