Avril Lavigne arrived in Manhattan at sixteen with an attitude that wasn't in any record label's playbook. Arista Records wanted to mold a new soft folk star, but she insisted on distorted guitars. The result was a multimillion-dollar contract signed before she was old enough to drive.
In 2002, she released Let Go, and the teen pop market was blown wide open. That girl from Ontario didn't wear glitter dresses or rehearsed choreography. She wore neckties over tank tops and skate shoes worn out from real use.
She sold sixteen million copies of her debut album in just one year. Radio stations couldn't stop playing Complicated and Sk8er Boi while executives struggled to understand how a teenager from a small town was topping the traditional sales charts. The answer was the honesty of her lyrics.
There was no turning back.
For her second album, Under My Skin, released in 2004, she pursued a much darker sound. She worked with Chantal Kreviazuk and moved away from the hit-making producers to explore loss and isolation. The album debuted at number one in the United States and Japan, confirming that her audience was growing up with her.
But fame brought with it a pressure that few artists in their twenties manage to handle. In 2007, she released The Best Damn Thing and shifted toward a brighter, more commercial pop punk sound. The single Girlfriend became the first video in YouTube history to surpass 100 million views.
That fact changed the rules of the digital game forever.
During this period she launched her own clothing line, Abbey Dawn, and got involved in designing fragrances. Lavigne didn't want to be just a face on album covers, and she began taking full control of her brand image. In 2011, she released Goodbye Lullaby after several delays caused by clashes with her record label over the project's creative direction.
In 2014, the singer's life came to an abrupt halt. A tick bite gave her Lyme disease and kept her bedridden for months. The media silence was total, and many outlets speculated with absurd theories about her disappearance.
She spent two years rebuilding the physical strength she needed to step back into a recording studio.
In 2019 she released Head Above Water, in which she shared her battle with illness through powerful ballads. It was a necessary album to close a painful chapter, but her fans were asking for the electric energy of her early days. So she decided to return to her rawest musical roots.
She signed with DTA Records, Travis Barker's label, in 2021 to bring back the energy of pop punk. In 2022 she released the album Love Sux, featuring collaborations with artists such as Machine Gun Kelly. The record brought back the fast-paced rhythms and direct lyrics that made her famous two decades earlier.
The industry gave her a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in August 2022. During the ceremony, she wore the same hoodie she wore as an unknown in Canada. It was a statement of consistency in an industry that often devours the identity of its stars.
In 2024 she launched her Greatest Hits tour to revisit a career that includes eight Grammy nominations. The tour covered North America and Europe, with stops at large-scale festivals where audiences once again sang along to early-2000s anthems. Ticket sales for her UK concerts exceeded local promoters' expectations.
Lavigne retains ownership of much of her publishing catalog through her own company. In 2024, her estimated worldwide sales surpassed forty million physical albums.
