Aziz Ansari was born in Columbia, but his mind was always in the comedy basements of New York. The son of Tamil immigrants, this young man from South Carolina decided medicine wasn't for him before he even set foot on campus. He studied marketing at the Stern School of Business while grinding it out on the stages of the Upright Citizens Brigade. His energy was jittery, and his jokes focused on the most mundane pop culture.
In 2009, he landed the role of Tom Haverford in Parks and Recreation. The character was an office dandy obsessed with luxury brands and mobile apps. It worked because Ansari gave him a pathetic vulnerability that wasn't in the original script.
The series ran for seven seasons and gave him the financial cushion to stop being a supporting actor.
And then he risked everything.
In 2015, Netflix gave him complete creative freedom to make Master of None. He was no longer interested in the crude humor or quick sketches of his Human Giant days. He wanted to shoot on 35mm and explore immigration, modern love and old age, with a tone reminiscent of 1970s European cinema.
The second season was partly shot in Italy. It won two Emmy Awards for writing and became the voice of a generation that didn't know what to do with its free time.
In 2018, a digital publication reported a disastrous date that put his career on pause. The debate over consent and the gray areas of sexual behavior kept him out of the spotlight for a full year. There were no grand statements or televised apology tours.
He returned in 2019 with the special Right Now, directed by Spike Jonze. He took the stage in a white T-shirt with a much darker attitude. He addressed cancel culture without playing the victim, and with a maturity his fans didn't expect.
It was a necessary change of style.
His move into directing feature films was a rough one. In 2022, he began shooting Being Mortal with Bill Murray, but production was indefinitely halted over complaints about the veteran actor's behavior on set. Ansari was left to deal with a dead project in which he had invested months of pre-production.
But the industry didn't turn its back on him.
In 2024, he returned to the spotlight with Good Fortune. This time, he starred alongside Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen in an action comedy produced by Lionsgate. Filming wrapped in Los Angeles after several delays caused by the 2023 writers' and actors' strikes.
The film has an estimated budget of $35 million.
