In May 1986, Barbara Sukowa took the stage at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes to receive the award for Best Actress. She had played the revolutionary Rosa Luxemburg under Margarethe von Trotta's direction. The honor was no surprise to European critics, but it confirmed an acting presence that refused to play it safe.
Before moving into film, she spent years on the stages of Berlin and Frankfurt. There she learned that rigor and fury are not at odds. In 1980, she took part in the television adaptation of Berlin Alexanderplatz, directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. She played Mieze in a monumental work of more than 15 hours of footage that demanded an almost violent physical commitment.
German theater discipline allows no shortcuts.
Fassbinder called her back for Lola in 1981. In this film, Sukowa played a seductress who challenged the morals of postwar German reconstruction. Her ability to hold close-ups without blinking caught the attention of the international industry. But she preferred to stay in Europe to explore roles with an explicit political charge.
Her professional partnership with Margarethe von Trotta is one of the most fruitful in European cinema. In 1981, they filmed Marianne and Juliane, in which Sukowa played an imprisoned terrorist based on the real-life figure of Gudrun Ensslin. The film won the Golden Lion in Venice.
And the gamble paid off.
Sukowa wasn't interested in pleasing the camera but in understanding the logic of extreme women. In 2012 they worked together again on Hannah Arendt. For this role she had to learn to smoke like the philosopher and convey complex thought processes through silence. The film grossed more than $5 million in a very limited independent theater circuit.
In the late 80s, she moved to New York. She was looking for new creative challenges and ended up working with directors such as Lars von Trier on Europa and David Cronenberg on M. Butterfly. In the United States, she discovered that her classical training allowed her to fit into genre productions without losing her restraint.
It was a purely aesthetic decision.
For years, she balanced film with a solid music career. She has performed works by Schoenberg and Prokofiev with some of the world's top orchestras. As a result, her voice became a technical tool as precise as her gaze. In 2015, she accepted a role in the science fiction series 12 Monkeys, where she played Dr. Jones for four consecutive seasons.
In 2019 she starred in Entre nous by Filippo Meneghetti. In this drama about a lesbian relationship hidden for decades, she showed that maturity on camera requires absolute economy of gesture. The film was selected by France for the Oscars.
In 2023, she took part in the shoot of Air, directed by Ben Affleck, playing the founder of Adidas. A year later, she recorded the series Constellation for a streaming platform, in which she plays a scientist from the Soviet era. The production contract for this series required a shooting schedule of 90 days on locations in Morocco and Germany.
