The Kid Who Didn't Want to Be a Disney Star

Benjamin Stockham arrived in Los Angeles at age nine with a look that didn't fit the mold of the teen comedies of the era. His first real contact with the industry came in 2008 with a minor role in the horror film Quarantine. It wasn't a glamorous debut, but it taught him how a big-budget shoot really works.

That dry start set the pace for what came next. Benjamin avoided the usual routes into musical series and focused on characters with a very specific sense of strangeness.

In 2010, Fox gave him his first big break in Sons of Tucson. He played Robby Gunderson, the middle of three brothers who hire a drifter to pose as their father. The show barely lasted one season on the air. But critics noticed the kid who could hold his own comedically against adult actors without breaking a sweat.

The industry devours nearly everything.

Benjamin, however, avoided the broken toys. After his first series ended, he took on projects such as 1600 Penn in 2012, where he played the son of the President of the United States. It was a supporting role but a key one for sharpening his comedic timing before the project that would change how the public saw him.

Success Measured in Thirty-Three Episodes

In 2014, About a Boy premiered on NBC. The adaptation of Nick Hornby's novel needed a Marcus Brewer who wouldn't come across as irritating or overly sweet. Benjamin Stockham landed the role because he brought an unusual maturity that contrasted with the character of David Walton.

The chemistry between the two carried the series through two full seasons. Stockham's contract reflected the importance of his role in the main storyline. He was not the kid who passed through just to deliver a joke, but the emotional engine of the story.

And the gamble paid off.

But network television is a treacherous terrain. In 2015 the series was canceled, leaving Stockham in a difficult position. He had grown up in front of the cameras, and his looks were beginning to change. That transition from child to teenager is often the end of the road for many, but he chose to space out his appearances so as not to oversaturate his image.

Maturity Behind the Screen

In 2017, he appeared in the pilot of Lost & Found and had a brief appearance on Gotham. Benjamin no longer chased the full spotlight of teen magazine covers. He focused on voice work and on projects where his voice mattered more than his face, a decision that helped him keep some normalcy in his private life.

In 2020 he shot the film The Lost Husband under the direction of Vicky Wight. He played a teenager in a story of perseverance set in rural Texas. The production had a tight budget and was shot mostly on real locations. It was his return to film after years of dominance on television.

Benjamin Stockham was never the typical blond kid from a cereal commercial.

His career is defined by the absence of scandal and a savvy handling of silence. Rather than forcing his presence on social media or empty promotional events, he has preferred that his name appear only when there is a script involved. Filming of The Lost Husband lasted about six weeks on various farms near Austin. His character has barely twenty minutes of total screen time.
