Bérénice Marlohe spent years hearing that her look didn't fit the mold of French cinema. She was thirty-two when she landed the role that pulled her out of European obscurity. Before that, her reality was failed castings at Paris agencies that had no idea where to place her.
Paris was never her place.
Before moving to the United States, she worked on low-budget French TV series. She appeared in productions such as Père et Maire and Femmes de loi between 2007 and 2009. But the French market resisted her because of her mixed Chinese, Cambodian and French heritage. Casting directors often told her she didn't look French enough for lead roles.
In 2011, she decided to take control of her career in an unconventional way. She had no agent in the UK and no contacts among the industry's big names. She found the Bond franchise's casting director on social media and sent her audition material directly. It was a risky move that led to a private audition in London.
And the gamble paid off.
She landed the role of Sévérine in Skyfall, the James Bond installment that hit theaters in 2012. The production had a budget of $200 million and became a global box office phenomenon. Marlohe went from the precarious French TV system to red carpets around the world in just six months.
But the Bond girl label is often a trap for actresses. Marlohe tried to avoid being typecast by pursuing independent projects and auteur cinema. In 2014, she starred in 5 to 7, a romantic comedy set in New York in which she played the wife of a French diplomat.
In 2017, she worked under Terrence Malick on Song to Song. She shot scenes alongside Ryan Gosling on a set where improvisation was the absolute rule. That same year, she took part in the return of the series Twin Peaks under the direction of David Lynch, playing an enigmatic woman at the Great Northern Hotel.
Her interest in science fiction led her to headline Kill Switch in 2017. The film was shot with a visual style close to a first-person shooter video game. It was a complex technical experiment that failed to win over critics, but it showed her interest in genre productions outside the commercial mainstream.
Also in 2017, she shot Revolt in South Africa. The shoot took place in extreme weather conditions and on a tight budget by Hollywood standards. But she preferred the mud of international sets to the comfort of the Parisian studios that had turned her down years earlier.
Her technical training goes beyond the camera. She studied piano for ten years at the Paris Conservatory before deciding on acting. This musical discipline shapes how she understands the rhythm of dialogue and the pauses needed in front of the lens.
In 2022, she joined the cast of Spoils of War, a production directed by Caspar Seiler. Two years later, in 2024, she appeared in the feature film The Valley. She has kept her residence outside France to avoid the constraints that marked the early days of her career.
In 2012, the watch brand Omega named her its official ambassador for the advertising campaign tied to the international release of Skyfall.
