Bill Goldberg was discovered by Hollywood after his body broke down on a football field. An abdominal tear in 1994 ended his time with the Atlanta Falcons and pushed him toward the wrestling ring, where WCW turned him into an unstoppable force of 130 kilos. That winning streak caught the attention of producers looking for tough guys who didn't need stunt doubles.
In 1999, Jean-Claude Van Damme was looking for an antagonist who wouldn't look like a toy next to him. Goldberg accepted the role of Romeo in Universal Soldier: The Return. He wasn't after an Oscar nomination but rather wanted to use the buzz around his public persona to break into an industry that paid better than taking punches on the mat.
And the gamble paid off.
But his real breakout beyond pure action came years later. In 2005 he joined the cast of The Longest Yard alongside Adam Sandler. He played Battle, a convict with tremendous strength and unexpected sensitivity who served as a comic counterpoint in a big-budget film. That role showed that Goldberg could handle the rhythm of a studio comedy without losing his aura of a dangerous tough guy.
That same year he starred in Santa's Slay. It was a horror production in which he played a murderous Santa Claus who was actually the son of Satan. The film became a cult favorite among genre fans for its lack of pretense and for the way Goldberg used his physique to pull off creative on-screen kills.
But his in-ring record was always limited by his sheer bulk.
Before accepting a script, Goldberg used to prioritize projects that wouldn't interfere with his occasional returns to the ring. In 2010 he took part in Kill Speed and voiced characters in animated series such as Family Guy. And although his film presence declined in favor of television, he never stopped working on productions that played up his image as a veteran warrior.
Between 2017 and 2018 he appeared in the series The Goldbergs. He played coach Nick Mellor in a nostalgia-driven bit that worked very well with American audiences. It was a smart way to poke fun at his own physical intensity while staying relevant in pop culture.
In 2023 he appeared in the documentary The Checkup with Dr. David Agus to discuss the physical toll of his career. There, he explained how injuries accumulated over decades affect his daily mobility away from the spotlight. His contract with WWE officially ended in late 2022, and since then he has focused on managing his personal wealth at his ranch in Texas.
His latest official box office total as a supporting actor exceeds $190 million.
