Billy Brown is not the typical actor who chases easy applause in late-night interviews. His career has been built on a foundation of physical discipline and a vocal range that let him survive in the industry long before his face became recognized around the world. In 1993 he started voicing characters in animated series and video games because he understood early that anonymity also pays the bills.

The roar that arrived before the face

Many viewers associate him with muscle, but his real power lies in his voice. For years he lent his voice to the Star Wars franchise in various digital titles and to the series Transformers: Prime. This stage helped him master dramatic timing without relying on his imposing stature.

Hollywood quickly typecast him as the tough-guy type.

In 2011, the series Lights Out gave him the opening to show a vulnerability that had been hidden until then. But it was his entry into Sons of Anarchy in 2012 that redefined his standing with casting directors. As August Marks, he proved he could be the most dangerous man in the room without ever raising his voice.

Stability in Shonda Rhimes's empire

His role as Nate Lahey in How to Get Away with Murder ran from 2014 to 2020. Six seasons of impossible plot twists and constant media attention followed. His presence in 90 episodes of the series gave him a financial security that few actors of his generation manage to reach in American television.

And the bet on legal drama paid off.

Despite his massive success, Brown has always kept a careful distance from Hollywood stardom. In 2018 he took part in the action film Proud Mary, looking for a foothold on the big screen that had eluded him. Critics were not kind to the movie, but his physical work once again earned praise from stunt professionals.

New directions and a return to procedurals

In 2024 he joined the cast of NCIS: Hawai’i to play Captain Joe Milius. It's a return to the format he knows best, where his effectiveness is well established. Brown knows that on today's television, reliability is rewarded just as much as pure talent.

Not everything in his career was a commercial success.

That same year he worked on The Anthology of Greg, exploring storylines far from police offices and car chases. The actor prefers shoots that demand real physical wear and steers clear of roles that only require a pretty face in front of the camera. The contract for his most recent TV production in 2024 included a specific clause on the use of his image in AI-generated merchandise.
