Brenda Vaccaro has always had that voice that seems to have survived a night of whiskey and cigarette smoke. She wasn't the typical porcelain beauty studios were looking for in the mid-sixties, but her presence was physical and bold.
Her theater debut earned her three Tony nominations before she turned thirty.
In 1969, she played Shirley in Midnight Cowboy. That role alongside Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight showed she could steal scenes almost effortlessly. But the industry isn't always fair to talent that falls outside established boundaries.
And that's the thing: Vaccaro never wanted to jump through the hoops of extreme diets or the surgeries that erased expression. So she sought refuge in characters with more edges and less conventional glamour.
1975 brought her big break in Once Is Not Enough. She won the Golden Globe and was nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. It was the peak of a level of visibility that arthouse cinema later denied her, as it preferred more languid faces.
In 1977, she starred in Capricorn One. It was one of the few times mainstream action cinema gave her a central role in a plot full of space conspiracies.
But her success on the big screen quickly began to fade. Hollywood has a very short memory for women who keep aging without asking permission.
Prestige doesn't pay the bills.
The eighties were tough. Offers for leading film roles dried up, but she found a place on television. She appeared in episodes of The Love Boat and Murder, She Wrote, because the bills had to be paid while she waited for a decent script.
In 1990 she had a brilliant comeback on the series The Golden Girls, playing Sophia Petrillo's daughter. That performance earned her an Emmy nomination. She made an episodic character carry more weight than many leading roles of her era.
At the end of the 1990s, she lent her voice to the animated series Johnny Bravo. She played Bunny Bravo, and her raspy tone fit perfectly with the absurd humor of the Cartoon Network production.
Al Pacino personally called her in 2010 to take part in the TV movie You Don’t Know Jack. She played Jack Kevorkian's sister, and critics took notice of her again after years out of the media spotlight.
The industry still doesn't know where to place actresses in their eighties.
In 2017, she worked under Steven Soderbergh in the film Logan Lucky. Her ability to inhabit working-class characters remained her best technical tool in front of the camera.
She appeared in 2021 in the revival of Sex and the City titled And Just Like That…, playing Gloria Marquette. It was a brief three-episode appearance in which she handled the legacy of a deceased character with crushing composure.
Brenda Vaccaro lives in Los Angeles and has been a member of the actors' union for more than six decades. As of 2023, her professional record included a total of 114 different audiovisual productions.
