The Risk of Starting Out in New York

Britne Oldford was born in Toronto in 1992 and grew up with a clear sense that her place was far from home. Before turning eighteen, she moved to New York to study acting and start working as a model. Her face projects an ambiguity that the city's casting directors were quick to exploit.

New York was the only possible plan.

Her professional debut came in 2011 with the American version of Skins. She played Cadie Campbell, a complex character dealing with mental health issues, in a setting that television was only just beginning to explore honestly. And although critics were harsh on the adaptation, her performance caught the attention of industry producers for its naturalness.

The series was canceled after just one season.

But that early stumble didn't slow her work pace. In 2012, she landed the role of Alma Walker in American Horror Story: Asylum, the second season of the horror anthology created by Ryan Murphy. Playing a woman who is abducted by aliens in the 1960s demanded a physically intense dramatic range that firmly moved her away from teen roles.

Refuge in the Fantasy Genre

Working on a production of that caliber gave her the visibility she needed to take on projects nonstop for the rest of the decade. In 2013, she starred in Ravenswood, a spin-off of Pretty Little Liars that blended teen drama with supernatural elements. She signed a ten-episode contract, but the audience didn't respond as the network ABC Family had hoped, and the show abruptly ended.

So Oldford decided to look for opportunities in independent film and high-profile guest roles. In 2015, she joined the DC Comics universe in The Flash as Peek-a-Boo, a metahuman with teleportation abilities. The role gave her the chance to work on a big-budget set where digital effects shape every movement the actors make during filming.

And that ability to fit into strange worlds led her to star in Hunters in 2016, a Syfy production overseen by Gale Anne Hurd. In the series, she played a government agent who uncovers an alien conspiracy. The show was filmed entirely in Melbourne and marked her first major long-term international experience outside North America.

Her global breakthrough came when she joined the third season of The Umbrella Academy in 2022. She played Fei Hargreeves, Sparrow Number Three, a character known for her coldness and for being surrounded by computer-generated killer crows. Filming these scenes required considerable technical effort to coordinate her physical performance with post-production reference points.

The Leap to Creative Maturity

In 2023, she moved toward more psychological and sophisticated drama with Dead Ringers, the Amazon Prime Video miniseries that reimagines David Cronenberg's film. She played Genevieve, the actress who becomes the love interest of one of the twin leads played by Rachel Weisz.

And she proved that her stage presence could hold its own alongside major figures of British industry.

This project marked a significant change of direction because it dropped the fantasy elements to focus on character-driven storytelling. Alice Birch's script allowed her to explore a vulnerability that had no room in her earlier action or horror work. Her training includes intensive studies at the Toronto School of the Arts, where she specialized in classical theater before making the definitive leap to the screen.

Her contract for Dead Ringers included specific clauses on how intimate scenes would be depicted on set, overseen by a dedicated intimacy coordinator.
