Camille Rutherford was born in Paris, but her DNA belongs to two shores. The daughter of a British father and a French mother, she grew up handling two languages with a natural ease that later defined the way she stepped onto set. She studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur d'Art Dramatique in Paris. There she learned that silence communicates more than a shout.
In 2013, she got the chance to play Mary Queen of Scots under the direction of Thomas Imbach. It was a demanding role because it required constant fragility in front of the camera. French critics focused on her gaze and her ability to hold long takes without blinking.
And the Anglo-Saxon market took notice of her.
But Rutherford didn't immediately choose the path of big productions. She preferred to hone her craft in raw, experimental auteur cinema. She worked with Nicolas Klotz on Low Life during 2011. That experience was key to understanding her relationship with the camera as something physical, not just interpretive.
In 2020, she appeared in Felicità with a character that broke from her previous range. Her portrayal of Chloé showed a lighter yet technically precise side. She earned a César nomination for Most Promising Actress for this work. It was the moment her name stopped being a promise and carved out its own space in the French industry.
Because naturalism is her true working tool.
During 2022, she was part of the cast of La nuit du 12. Dominik Moll's film took home the top awards from the French academy, and she brought a restraint that was essential to a story charged with tension. She didn't seek the spotlight, but her presence balanced the story's most intense scenes.
The year 2023 marked a step up in scale with The Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan. She played Mathilde in a blockbuster that aimed to revitalize Alexandre Dumas's classic. Working on a project of this scale meant choreography and shooting schedules far stricter than in her independent beginnings.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, she shot L'Amour ouf under director Gilles Lellouche. It's a violent, electric love story that had its official premiere in the official selection at the Cannes Film Festival. Rutherford shares the poster with names such as Adèle Exarchopoulos and François Civil in a plot spanning several decades.
The film had an estimated budget of €32 million.
