Germaine Hélène Irène Lefebvre was not born to be a movie star. In 1945, she was working as a model in Paris, and her face was already appearing on the covers of French fashion magazines. But a chance meeting with producer Charles K. Feldman in 1957 permanently changed the course of her career.
Feldman took her to Hollywood even though she didn't speak English. There he gave her the stage name that would stay with her forever. Capucine spent months studying diction and acting before making her big-screen debut.
Capucine was the name of a flower.
Her first real break came in 1960 with Sueño de amor. For this role, she received a Golden Globe nomination. Although critics weren't always kind to her acting skills, her presence was undeniable to studios of the era.
The 1960s were her most active period. In 1962, she filmed The Lion alongside William Holden. During the shoot in Africa, they began a romantic relationship that lasted two years and affected her emotional stability afterward.
But the project that cemented her place in collective memory was The Pink Panther in 1963. In this Blake Edwards film, she played Simone Clouseau. The film grossed nearly $11 million in the United States alone, placing her at the forefront of the international film industry.
Comedy was never her favorite genre.
She reprised her role as Simone in two sequels produced in 1982 and 1983. Despite her fame, she preferred European cinema. She worked under Federico Fellini on Satyricon in 1969. At this stage, her career gradually shifted toward Italian and French productions, seeking roles with greater dramatic weight.
And the bet paid off for a while.
In the mid-1970s, she settled permanently in Lausanne. Her work pace slowed considerably, and she began accepting supporting roles in TV series and lower-budget films. She lived surrounded by cats and kept very few contacts in the film industry.
Her mental health declined in private. She suffered from bipolar disorder, which plunged her into periods of deep depression. In 1990, she took her own life by jumping from the window of her eighth-floor apartment.
She was 62 years old at the time of her death.
Swiss police confirmed that no suicide notes were found at the residence. Her estate was divided among charities and the care of her animals. The funeral was strictly private, with only a handful of people from her closest circle attending.
