The man with a thousand last names

Herbert Charles Angelo Kuchačevič ze Schluderpacheru arrived in London in 1939 with a Czech passport and a determination that bordered on arrogance. He was fleeing the Nazi invasion of Prague. He had no money, but he had a stage presence that soon caught the attention of British producers.

His first serious job didn't happen in front of a camera but at a BBC microphone. There he refined a precise, aristocratic English accent that would later serve him well in playing villains of absolute refinement. In those radio years, he learned that a voice could be as intimidating as a steady stare.

He was no ordinary actor.

Before audiences associated him with comedy, he had played Napoleon Bonaparte on two separate occasions. In 1942 he appeared in The Young Mr. Pitt, and in 1956 he took on the epic War and Peace, directed by King Vidor. Few actors in film history can say they have invaded Russia twice on the big screen.

But his face became recognized worldwide for a nervous twitch and a fierce hatred toward a clumsy inspector.

Dreyfus's shadow and the eternal twitch

In 1964, he accepted the role of Inspector Charles Dreyfus in A Shot in the Dark. What began as a supporting character to play opposite Peter Sellers became an eighteen-year professional partnership marked by real tension between the two actors. Lom couldn't stand Sellers's constant improvisation.

That real frustration spilled onto the screen. The eye twitch Dreyfus developed every time Clouseau committed a blunder was not in the original script. It was an organic reaction from Lom, a way to channel his own desperation on the set.

So audiences fell in love with his contained madness.

He took part in nearly every installment of the The Pink Panther series, even after Sellers died in 1980. In 1982 he shot Trail of the Pink Panther, and in 1993 he closed out his run with the character in Son of the Pink Panther, under the direction of Blake Edwards. It was a long and sometimes exhausting artistic partnership.

The Face Behind the Hammer Horror Masks

In 1962, he put on the mask for the Hammer version of The Phantom of the Opera. It was a physically demanding shoot where Lom insisted that his character not be a flat monster. He wanted viewers to feel the pain of a man betrayed by the music industry.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he was a constant presence in European horror and thriller co-productions. He worked with directors such as Jess Franco on Count Dracula in 1970, where he played Van Helsing opposite an imposing Christopher Lee. These were low-budget films, but Lom always brought a level of technical dignity that elevated the material.

His capacity for work never waned.

Away from the spotlight, he devoted himself to writing historical novels, earning notable critical acclaim. In 1971, he published Enter a Spy, and later Dr. Guillotine in 1992. After six decades in the craft and more than one hundred titles to his name, he quietly retired from public life.

His last film appearance came in 2004 in the TV movie Agatha Christie’s Marple. He died in his sleep at his London home on September 27, 2012, at the age of 95.
