Lee Dong-min never planned to be an actor or singer when a talent scout approached him outside a restroom at his high school. He had excellent grades and aimed to enter Seoul National University to study law. But the Korean entertainment industry has a sharp eye for looks, and the young man ended up accepting an offer that changed his name to Cha Eun-woo.

In 2016, he debuted with the group ASTRO. The flawless-face label followed him from the first minute on screen, and that shaped his early roles in television. Producers saw in him an impeccable clothes hanger more than a deep dramatic range. His first appearances in To Be Continued were the testing ground he needed to learn how a film set works.

And the gamble paid off.

The Stigma of the Aesthetic Standard

The release of My ID is Gangnam Beauty in 2018 marked his first major leading role. He played Do Kyung-seok, a college student who barely showed emotion. It was a smart move. The script used his natural coolness on camera to build a character that connected with young audiences in Korea and across Asia.

Eighteen million followers on social media began tracking his every move after that project. But commercial success did not always bring praise from specialized critics. He was accused of being a flat actor who relied too heavily on his looks. The Seoul studio system required him to maintain a polished image that clashed with his ambition to play more complex characters.

In 2020, he starred in True Beauty, and the phenomenon became unstoppable. The series adapted a massively successful webtoon, and Eun-woo fit the original drawing to a T. International luxury brands began vying for his contract. His face sold cosmetics and haute couture with an effectiveness few actors of his generation could match at the time.

Breaking away from the leading man image

In 2022 she took a risk with fantasy when she filmed Island. There she traded her school uniform for the role of an exorcist priest who wielded a sword with ease. It was a production of 200 million won per episode where she had to shoot demanding physical action scenes on Jeju Island. The shift in range was clear, though traces remained of the restrained expressiveness critics often point out.

It wasn't all smooth sailing.

In 2024, he took a more aggressive step with Wonderful World. He played Kwon Seon-yul, a young man living a precarious life full of resentment after losing his family. He appeared scruffy, eating noodles at a junkyard. It was his most serious attempt to break away from the polished idol image that the agency Fantagio had cultivated for years. The Korean press noted that for the first time, dirt could be seen under his fingernails in a close-up scene.

The pressure to maintain ratings on cable television is suffocating. In Seoul's industry, failure is measured in fractions of a share point, and it is not easily forgiven. So Eun-woo balanced these shoots with advertising contracts that demanded a flawless presence during Paris Fashion Week. This duality between the actor who seeks out the mud and the model who lives behind the glass defines his current career.

During the filming of his action scenes in 2023, he had to repeat a free-fall shot fourteen times in a row due to a malfunction in the safety wire system. The director of photography chose take number twelve because of the angle of the light over the actor's left shoulder.
