The Boy Who Sold Sweets on Lamma

Chow Yun-fat wasn't born with charisma stuck to his skin. On the island of Lamma, he spent his mornings helping his mother sell sweets and working in rice fields. His family was poor, and movies were far from his immediate priorities.

Then television came along.

In 1973, out of pure financial necessity, he enrolled in an acting course run by the TVB network. He wasn't the best actor in his class, but he had a presence the cameras loved. For years he appeared in one soap opera after another, which made him a familiar face to housewives in Hong Kong.

But the movies resisted him. His first forays onto the big screen were commercial disasters that earned him the nickname box office poison among local producers.

The Man with the Toothpick and Two Pistols

Before 1986, no one bet on him as an action hero. John Woo rescued him for a supporting role in A Better Tomorrow that ended up outshining the rest of the cast.

That trench coat and toothpick changed the look of Asian cinema. Audiences didn't want a perfect hero but a classy guy who bled and lost. The film earned astronomical box office numbers and made him the face of the heroic bloodshed genre.

He starred with The Killer in 1989 and Hard Boiled in 1992. Those films defined the choreographed violence that Hollywood would copy to death years later. Chow didn't just shoot; he danced through the bullets with an elegance no Western actor could match.

And the gamble paid off.

The Price of Global Fame

His move to the United States was rocky. In 1998, he tried to conquer the American market with The Replacement Killers, but critics were cold. He struggled to find roles that weren't clichés of the silent assassin or the martial arts master.

But in 2000, he landed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

The film starring Ang Lee won four Academy Awards and grossed more than $213 million worldwide. Chow played Li Mu Bai with a restraint few expected from an action star. It was his international breakthrough and the moment his face became unforgettable for moviegoers in the provinces of Spain.

The Years of Invisible Fortune

In 2018, he starred in Project Gutenberg alongside Aaron Kwok. It was a massive hit in China that proved his name still drew audiences to theaters despite the passing decades.

But his biggest headline had nothing to do with the movies.

He announced he would donate his entire personal fortune after his death. His net worth is estimated at around 5,600 million Hong Kong dollars. He lives on a ridiculously modest monthly budget and takes public transportation like any anonymous citizen of the Kowloon district.

In 2023, she released One More Chance, in which she plays a compulsive gambler trying to reconnect with his son. The film closed its opening weekend with modest earnings of 13 million yuan in the Chinese market.
