Christina Cox isn't your typical method actress. Her training at the Ryerson Theatre School in Toronto was just the beginning of something far more physical. Before stepping onto a set, she had already mastered taekwondo and boxing, a discipline that ended up defining her profile in the North American industry.
In 1999 she starred in Better than Chocolate. This low-budget Canadian film broke the mold in independent cinema with its frank, natural approach to sexuality. The project grossed more than ten million dollars worldwide, and Cox suddenly found herself on the radar of casting directors in Los Angeles.
And the physique delivered.
Her ability to perform risky scenes without stunt doubles opened the door to major science fiction productions. In 2004 she played Eve Logan in The Chronicles of Riddick, sharing the screen with Vin Diesel. That shoot was grueling because of the weather conditions and the technical demands of the fight choreography.
Real stability didn't come from big-screen films but from television. In 2007 Cox took the lead role in Blood Ties, a series in which she played a private investigator who gradually loses her sight. The show was filmed in Vancouver and ran for two seasons before being canceled by Lifetime due to budget problems.
But she never stopped working. Her name appears in the credits of almost every major franchise of the last decade. She appeared in Dexter, NCIS, and Arrow. In 2016 she joined the cast of Shadowhunters to bring Elaine Lewis to life, a role she kept until the series ended in 2019.
Sometimes the quiet work is the most profitable.
Cox sees the industry as a job built on endurance. She isn't chasing fashion magazine covers; she prefers the security of the character actor. In 2023 she appeared in The Way Home, playing the adult version of Alice Landry, a role that demanded much more dramatic weight than her usual action parts.
Her professional maturity brought new interests behind the camera. Cox began to take an interest in the financing and script development processes after watching many interesting projects die in executive offices. So she decided to get more involved in the technical decisions on the sets where she worked.
In 2024 her casting was confirmed for Suits: L.A., the much-anticipated spin-off of the legal series that broke records on streaming platforms. In this production she plays Kelly, a lawyer with a complicated past who must navigate the murky side of the California justice system. The contract includes specific clauses on the length of shooting days to help her balance family life.
Discipline is her only secret.
She has lived in Los Angeles for years. There, she balances her acting career with teaching martial arts to actors who need to prepare for action roles. In 2010 she married Grant Mattos, a former NFL player, and they have a daughter together. The pilot for her latest NBC series was shot entirely on location in Vancouver in the spring of 2024.
