In 2011 the video game industry took a technical leap with the release of L.A. Noire. Adam J. Harrington lent his face and expressions to Roy Earle, a cynical narcotics detective who turned out to be the most hated and fascinating character in the game. The recording process used 32 high-definition cameras to capture every nervous twitch of his jaw.
It was exhausting technical work.
Before he landed at the motion capture studios in Los Angeles, this Canadian, born in 1972, spent years jumping between procedural series. Harrington was born in Hamilton, and his first steps had nothing to do with Hollywood scripts.
Before acting, he studied Marine Biology. But acting won out over the oceans, and he began landing supporting roles in productions shot in Vancouver. In 2003 he appeared in Dead Like Me, and soon after he decided it was time to move to California to pursue projects with bigger budgets.
His tough-guy look and deep voice opened the doors to Dexter and The Secret Circle. But his real recognition within the industry came by a route that is invisible to mainstream television viewers.
In 2018, he took on the role of Sindri in the video game God of War. The character let him explore a comedic and vulnerable side that television had denied him because of his FBI agent look. He reprised the role in God of War: Ragnarök in 2022 and made players empathize with a dwarf obsessed with hygiene in the middle of a Norse apocalypse.
Voice work pays the bills, but television gives you status.
Despite his success in the digital world, Harrington never abandoned live-action acting. In 2021 he appeared in the movie The Little Things, sharing the screen with Denzel Washington and Rami Malek. As a result, his name once again drew strong interest from major national networks.
In 2024, Harrington's career took an unexpected turn when he joined the cast of General Hospital. He played John Jagger Cates, a celebrity who had not appeared on the show in three decades. The production company's decision was risky, because the role had originally belonged to another actor beloved by longtime fans.
Harrington took on the challenge of playing an FBI agent with a traumatic past in a series that airs new episodes every day. The shooting schedule on shows like this is brutal, demanding that he memorize dozens of pages of dialogue every morning.
But the experience he built up in series like Bosch or S.W.A.T. let him adapt to the pace of daytime television with apparent ease. In June 2024, the actor was still filming his scenes at ABC studios in Los Angeles.
