Kim Hawthorne

Kim Hawthorne spent her early years training in opera and classical theater at Birmingham-Southern College in Alabama.

Her voice was her main tool.

But her destiny lay on the stages of Atlanta and then on screens around the world. In 1991, she landed her first credited role in the series I’ll Fly Away. It was a modest start that led to a decade of steady work in television productions, where she learned the craft from the margins.

The Rigor of Eternal High School

Throughout the nineties and early two thousands, she specialized in authoritative characters. She played detective Rose Williams in Da Vinci’s Inquest between 2000 and 2005. Ninety-one episodes taught her that Canadian television was an excellent proving ground for making the jump to Hollywood.

Her big break came with The Chronicles of Riddick in 2004. In that sci-fi blockbuster, she shared the screen with Vin Diesel. But Hawthorne never let herself be dazzled by the multimillion-dollar budgets of major studios. She preferred the depth of long-form scripts.

And the gamble paid off.

The Rise of Kerissa Greenleaf

In 2016, she received the script for a series produced by Oprah Winfrey. The project was called Greenleaf, and she played Kerissa. It was the role that pulled her out of obscurity in the supporting credits. She played an ambitious, complex woman caught up in the power struggles of a megachurch in Memphis.

The series ran for five seasons. It ended in 2020, leaving a loyal audience that still streams the show on digital platforms today. Hawthorne used that time to launch her own jewelry line, Kim Hawthorne Collection, because she needed a creative outlet away from the spotlight.

Not everything came easily at first.

Before that project, she went through grueling auditions and minor roles in How to Get Away with Murder or Criminal Minds. She returned to the latter show years later. In 2023, she took part in the new chapter titled Criminal Minds: Evolution, playing Deputy Attorney General Felicia Savane.

Production and Realism

Her career is measured by consistency rather than flashy awards. In 2022, she joined the cast of The Good Doctor to play Dr. Ellen McLean. It's a recurring role that demands a level of technical precision she has mastered after three decades in front of the camera.

Hawthorne lives in Los Angeles but maintains a close connection to the theater scene. She continues to choose projects where the script matters more than the salary. Her contract on recent productions remains under the standard confidentiality clauses of the actors' union.

Filming her scenes for season 2023 was completed in just three weeks of intensive work in Vancouver.
