In 1982, Peter Wingfield decided that saving lives could wait. With just four weeks left to finish his medical studies at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, the young Welshman hung up his white coat. That decision looked like career suicide, but the national youth theatre had already injected him with a poison different from science.
His training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama gave him the tools to see that acting was not so different from surgery. Both demand pinpoint precision and absolute calm under pressure. But in London in the late eighties, nobody yet knew him as the face of television immortality.
And the gamble paid off.
After cutting his teeth in smaller British productions and gaining experience in theater, his big break came with the medical drama Medics in 1990. It's ironic that his first major role brought him back to the hallways of a fictional hospital after he had fled a real one. That performance as Alex Taylor put him on the radar of international casting directors.
In 1995, the encounter that would define his public image for the next three decades took place. Wingfield joined the third season of Highlander: The Series to play Methos. The character was designed to last just one episode, but the chemistry with the lead and his elegant cynicism forced the writers to rewrite their plans.
The public didn't want a hero; they wanted the reformed villain.
Methos was a man five thousand years old with the weary eyes of someone who has seen it all. Wingfield gave the character a strange vulnerability (mixed with a latent cruelty) that set him apart from the fantasy stereotypes of the time. That success led him to move to Vancouver, where the Canadian industry welcomed him as one of its most reliable faces.
But the North American industry tends to typecast European actors easily. Wingfield spent years jumping from one genre series to another. In 2000 he played Dr. Robert Helm in Queen of Swords and shortly afterward made a brief appearance in X-Men 2 in 2003. His presence always brought a dramatic weight that elevated often mediocre productions.
Despite having a packed schedule of fan conventions and supporting roles in series such as Sanctuary and Caprica, the actor felt the cycle was not complete. In 2011, he made a decision that was unusual in the world of Hollywood. At 48 years old, he decided to resume his medical career right where he had left it almost three decades earlier.
It was a return to his roots, without cameras in front of him.
He enrolled at the University of Vermont to complete his training, and in 2012 he began his residency in anesthesiology. It wasn't a retirement due to a lack of work, since Wingfield kept getting offers. He simply decided that the challenge of real medicine outweighed the fiction of the film sets in Vancouver or Los Angeles.
For years, he juggled 24-hour shifts with occasional appearances in front of the camera. In 2022, he took part in the series The L Word: Generation Q, playing a lawyer named Whitaker. It was a brief technical job that he did while keeping his post as an anesthesiologist at a San Diego medical center.
Wingfield completed his medical specialty training in 2015 and has practiced actively in the United States ever since. His name now appears in California's official medical records under license number A136453.
