Christopher L. Yost didn't break into the industry with an established name. In 2002, he joined Marvel Comics as an intern, and his first real job was writing scripts for animated series. Nobody back then expected those cartoons to become the testing ground for the future of film.
He worked on X-Men: Evolution, where the character of X-23 was born. It worked so well on the small screen that the publisher moved the character to comics in 2004. Yost went from television scripts to writing long runs on New X-Men and X-Force.
Paper can hold almost anything.
But success on the page didn't guarantee a spot at the major studios in Burbank. So he had to prove his technical skill by coordinating complex storylines on The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes during 2010. Many fans still consider that series the best version of the superhero team.
His leap to the big screen came in 2013. He worked on the script for Thor: The Dark World during a production that went through constant changes in direction. It was a difficult shoot, with the screenplay being rewritten almost daily.
His real breakthrough at Disney came in 2017 with Thor: Ragnarok. He collaborated with Craig Kyle and Eric Pearson to completely change the tone of the main character. The film grossed 853 million dollars and saved a franchise that seemed exhausted after its second installment.
Writing for Marvel demands surgical precision.
Because the studio system demands that every line fit with ten other different movies. Yost specialized in that kind of shared storytelling, where the writer has to give up room to the brand. In 2017, he also took part in the early drafts of several projects that Marvel Studios was keeping secret.
In 2019, he joined the writing team of The Mandalorian for Disney+. He wrote the sixth episode of the first season, titled The Prisoner. It was an action-packed episode that recalled the action movies of the 1980s.
In 2021, he developed the live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop for Netflix. The series drew a cold response from fans of the original anime. Netflix canceled the project 26 days after its premiere due to low viewership worldwide.
The industry is unforgiving when budgets are high.
His latest notable film credit was in 2022 with Secret Headquarters for Paramount+. He co-wrote the script with Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, a superhero story aimed at a young audience. The writer is still represented by Verve Talent and Literary Agency in Los Angeles.
