Carlos Ray Norris was born in Oklahoma in 1940, and nothing about his childhood as a shy kid suggested he would become the face of machismo in homes across half the world. His life changed at a military base in South Korea. There he discovered Tang Soo Do while serving in the Air Force, and he returned to the United States with an iron discipline that allowed him to open his own chain of martial arts schools.
When he returned home, he set up a network of gyms across the country.
In 1968 he won the world karate title in the middleweight division. He held that crown for six straight years. But the real money wasn't on the mats; it came from the connections he made teaching Hollywood stars like Steve McQueen. It was McQueen who urged him to try his luck in front of the camera, because he saw in him a physical presence that the action cinema of the era needed.
His real baptism by fire came in 1972 inside the Colosseum in Rome. Bruce Lee called him for The Way of the Dragon, and Norris accepted the challenge of playing the villain who loses to the little dragon in a duel that film schools still study today. That fight gave him the visibility he needed to stop being a supporting actor with muscles.
And the phone didn't stop ringing.
He signed an exclusive contract with Cannon Films in the 1980s. The studio run by Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus understood that Norris was the perfect product for the Reagan era. In 1984 he starred in Missing in Action. The film cost less than three million dollars and grossed nearly 23 million in the U.S. market alone. It marked the start of a winning streak in which the actor churned out titles like Invasion U.S.A. and Delta Force.
As big-screen action films began to saturate audiences with explosions, Norris turned to television. In 1993 he premiered Walker, Texas Ranger. The series ran for eight seasons and was sold in more than a hundred countries. The character of Cordell Walker was an extension of his own life philosophy, built on discipline and straightforward justice with few words.
But the strangest turn of his career happened off the set in the mid-2000s.
The internet turned him into a living myth through the famous facts about Chuck Norris. What started as a joke on college forums became a global marketing tool that revitalized his image for new generations. The actor played along with intelligence. In 2012 he took part in The Expendables 2, earning a million-dollar paycheck for just a few minutes on screen, poking fun at his own legend in front of Sylvester Stallone.
In 2024 he shot Agent Recon, playing Alastair, a security captain at a secret base. Now in his eighties, Norris still performs part of his own fight scenes without relying constantly on stunt doubles. His daily training has barely changed since the 1970s, and he keeps up an exercise routine that lets him stay active.
Zombie Plane is scheduled for release in 2025.
The film was shot in Australia under the direction of Michael J. Bassett. Norris shares the cast with Vanilla Ice in a story that mixes comedy with the horror genre. The estimated budget for this production is around 15 million dollars.
