Sheree J. Wilson grew up around horses in the mountains of Colorado. Her father worked for IBM and her mother was a real estate agent. Nobody in her family imagined she would end up in the television studios of Burbank. In 1981, she moved to New York to work as a model with the Wilhelmina agency.
She filmed more than thirty commercials in just three years for brands like Burger King and Maybelline. But her real goal was acting. In 1984, she made her film debut in the comedy Crimewave under the direction of Sam Raimi. It was a chaotic and unrewarding shoot for her.
Her bet on movies only partly paid off.
In 1985, she landed a role in Fraternity Vacation, where she shared the screen with Tim Robbins. That film was a low-budget teen comedy chasing quick box office money. Wilson soon realized her profile fit better on the small screen than in big Hollywood productions.
In 1986, Wilson landed a role in Dallas, playing April Stevens for five consecutive seasons. Her character was murdered in Paris during the show's final stretch because the actress was pregnant in real life and needed to leave the job. That storyline wrapped up her contract on one of the most-watched productions in the history of American television.
Chuck Norris called her personally in 1993. They wanted her to play prosecutor Alex Cahill in Walker, Texas Ranger. The series was shot almost entirely in Texas to cut production costs and add realism to the outdoor scenes. Wilson accepted because the salary was steady and the schedule let her raise her children outside Los Angeles.
Wilson filmed 196 episodes of the action series.
But the end of the series in 2001 did not mean her retirement. In 2005, she returned to play the same prosecutor in the TV movie Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire. The ratings were acceptable, but CBS decided not to order any more installments of the franchise. That was the moment she decided to move to the other side of the camera.
In 2011, she founded her own production company to finance independent family-friendly projects and westerns. She produced and starred in Easy Rider: The Ride Back in 2012. But the DVD market was dying, and distribution was difficult in the usual commercial channels. Independent film in the United States always depends on international presales.
Wilson lives on a farm that breeds purebred horses. In 2014, she shot A Fine Step alongside Luke Perry, combining her passion for horseback riding with acting. The film had a minimal budget, and it was shot in rural locations in Kentucky.
The industry changed the rules of the game.
In 2019, she appeared in the biographical drama The Silent Natural. In 2021, she played a grandmother in the swimming film Flip Turn. The actress keeps a steady workload in low-budget productions aimed at streaming platforms that specialize in content for the American Bible Belt. In 2024, Wilson's rate for a shooting day on projects like these matched the SAG-AFTRA union pay scale, with no major star perks.
