Claudia Jessie did not grow up in a period mansion surrounded by servants. Her reality in Birmingham was a houseboat on the canals and a mother who cleaned floors to pay for her dance classes. That lack of privilege explains why she approaches every shoot with a discipline that borders on obsessive.
There were no red carpets at the beginning.
In 2012 she made her debut on the series Doctors in a supporting role that barely covered her rent. For years she moved between medical procedurals and minor crime dramas while dealing with depersonalization attacks that nearly drove her out of acting. But Nichiren Buddhism gave her the anchor she needed to keep going in an industry that often overlooks anyone who doesn't fit the perfect star mold.
In 2017 she appeared in the fourth season of Line of Duty. Her portrayal of Detective Jodie Taylor was a lesson in restraint and gave her a grasp of how big BBC productions work. The British industry began to see in her an actress capable of handling fast-paced dialogue without losing naturalness.
In 2018 her big break came with Vanity Fair, playing Amelia Sedley. It was a total contrast to her previous work. But it was on that set that she made it clear she could steal scenes with just a sidelong glance or a well-placed silence.
And then Netflix's offer arrived.
In 2020, the premiere of Bridgerton immediately changed her level of exposure. Her role as Eloise Bridgerton moved away from the usual damsel-in-distress tropes to offer a cynical view of 19th-century London society. Audiences connected with the nervous energy Jessie brings to every one of her scenes.
She keeps her home in Birmingham, away from the noise of London. She has no Instagram or Twitter because she considers her mental health a priority over constantly promoting her image. As a result, her media presence is limited to professional interviews, where she tends to talk more about her dogs than her contracts.
In 2024, she joined the cast of Toxic Town. This production tells the story of the legal battle over toxic waste in Corby and allowed her to step away from corsets and into the rawest British social drama. The series avoided visual artifice to focus on pure performance.
Production on the fourth season of Bridgerton was scheduled to start in late 2024, with an eight-month shooting schedule at Shepperton Studios.
