Jessica Raine grew up on a farm in Eardisley surrounded by cows and a rural calm that had little to do with the spotlight. Her father balanced farm work with amateur theater. She decided she wanted to act, but the path was not a straight line. She was rejected by almost every acting school on her first attempt before finally getting into RADA.
After graduating in 2008, she began working at the National Theatre in London. She wasn't chasing fame. She preferred the stage and supporting roles in prestigious productions. But British television has a pull for faces that convey truth effortlessly.
In 2012, the BBC premiered Call the Midwife. The series, about midwives in London's East End in the 1950s, became a massive ratings hit. Raine played Jenny Lee. Ten million viewers followed her every week through the soot-stained, impoverished streets of postwar Britain.
The industry took notice.
But success in a period drama can be a golden cage. In 2014 she decided to leave the production at the peak of its popularity. She didn't want audiences to see her only as the sweet, compassionate nurse in the spotless uniform. She needed to get her professional image dirty.
That same year, 2014, she appeared in the second season of Line of Duty. Her character was the complete opposite of Jenny Lee. It was a brief, violent appearance that signaled to casting directors that she was ready for much darker material. Raine prefers characters who keep uncomfortable secrets.
In 2015, she took on the role of Jane Rochford in Wolf Hall. She also joined the cast of Fortitude, filming in the icy landscapes of Iceland. She worked tirelessly, taking on one quality project after another, but avoided big Hollywood blockbusters. She preferred to stay in the U.K. with scripts that demanded real dramatic weight.
It was a risky decision.
In 2018, she filmed Patrick Melrose alongside Benedict Cumberbatch. Her role as Julia was cynical and sophisticated. That job confirmed that her talent for contemporary drama matched her skill with period stories. Lead roles in suspense series began to come her way naturally.
In 2019, she filmed Baptiste and the series Informer. In both projects she played complex women with questionable moral authority. Raine steers clear of perfection. She's drawn to the cracks and the characters' mistakes, because that's where the interest lies for a smart viewer.
The year 2022 marked a shift in how she approached television work. She starred in The Devil’s Hour for Amazon Prime Video as Lucy Chambers. The series blended psychological horror with science fiction. The shoot demanded absolute technical precision because of the show's nonlinear plot structure.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024 the series wrapped up its run with filming of the third season. During that period she also appeared in The Way under the direction of Michael Sheen. It's a story about a civil strike that brings a small Welsh town to a standstill. Raine brings a much-needed sobriety to a plot that borders on social surrealism.
Her creative process has changed over the years. Before filming, she analyzes the character's psychology from an almost clinical point of view. She doesn't rely on pure intuition. She prefers to understand the mechanics of the script and how her physical presence affects the rhythm of the final edit.
Production on the third installment of The Devil’s Hour in 2024 meant twelve-hour night shoots at Shepperton Studios with a crew of more than one hundred people.
