Liz White was born in Rotherham in 1977 and trained at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Rather than chase fast fame at London drama schools, she preferred grit and technical training before breaking into British national television in the early 2000s.
In 2006 she landed the role of Annie Cartwright in Life on Mars. That police drama with science fiction touches demanded absolute restraint against the histrionics of her male co-stars. White played a woman trapped in the systemic sexism of 1973 but endowed with operational intelligence superior to that of her bosses.
Seven million viewers watched the series finale on the BBC.
And it worked.
But the actress chose not to be typecast in procedural period drama. After ending the series in 2007, she turned down similar projects to return to the stage. In 2011 she starred in A Woman Killed with Kindness at the National Theatre, proving her command of the stage was just as dry and effective as on camera.
International audiences first recognized her in 2012 for something that barely showed her face. In the film The Woman in Black she played Jennet Humfrye, the spectral presence that haunted Daniel Radcliffe in a production from the legendary Hammer Film Productions that grossed 129 million dollars worldwide.
She needed no dialogue to build the menace. Her performance relied on physicality and a stare that cut through the black gauze of her costume. The film's success returned her to the front ranks of the industry, although White kept her home far from the Hollywood spotlight.
The theater was always his refuge.
For her, the craft is about the disappearance of the ego. In 2014 she took part in the series Our Zoo, playing Lizzie Mottershead. The story depicted the creation of Chester Zoo in the 1930s, and White brought a restraint that balanced the family-friendly tone of the script.
Between 2017 and 2019 she moved into the school setting of Ackley Bridge. There she brought to life Emma Keane, a primary school teacher dealing with racial integration in a Yorkshire community. Her performance avoided the cheap sentimentality that often weighs down this kind of British social drama.
In 2021 she joined the cast of Unforgotten for its fourth season. She played Fiona Grayson in a plot of secrets buried for decades that demanded constant shifts between vulnerability and suspicion. British critics praised her ability to carry close-ups without any need for dramatic underlining.
And her commitment to staying grounded paid off.
In 2023 she shot the series The Long Shadow, about the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper. In this ITV production she played PS Meg Winterburn, capturing the police frustration of an era marked by technological ineffectiveness. Filming took place on real locations in northern England to preserve the visual naturalism that defines her filmography.
Liz White wrapped up 2023 with her role in the second season of The Chelsea Detective, playing Inspector Rachel Weston. Her fee per episode on productions of this caliber is kept under strict confidentiality clauses in public television contracts.
