Synopsis of Life on Mars

Sam Tyler is a Manchester police officer who, in 2006, is involved in a car accident. When he wakes up, he finds himself in the same place where he used to work, but in 1973, thirty-three years earlier. There, he works in the same job for the police force that preceded the current one, under the command of Detective Gene Hunt. Sam has to adapt to an era with customs, technology and methods very different from his own. His goal is to understand what has happened to him and find a way back to his life. As he solves police cases, each episode brings him closer to that question, and his colleagues don't always make things easy for him.

«Is he mad, in a coma… or has Detective Sam Tyler really travelled back in time?»

Trivia about Life on Mars

The series was going to be titled Ford Granada, after a 1970s car, but the BBC refused to accept that name.
The surname Tyler was suggested by Matthew Graham's daughter, who had unknowingly taken the name from a Doctor Who character, Rose Tyler.
The record company denied Kudos permission to use Live and Let Die, by Paul McCartney and Wings, until the creators sent the episode directly to the musician.
On October 9, 2006, Graham confirmed that the second season would be the last, because Sam's story had a limited run and a clear ending.
The first season averaged 6.8 million viewers and consistently won its time slot, even against the competition from Northern Lights on ITV1.
The series won the International Emmy for Best Drama Series twice, in 2006 and in 2008.
The series was first set to be filmed in London, then in Leeds, and finally in Manchester, as part of a BBC initiative to produce more programs in the city.
According to Graham, the roadworks sign on the Mancunian Way motorway is a deliberate anachronism, which he justified as artistic license even though the road was completed in 1967.
