Colin Woodell was born in San Francisco in 1991 and soon understood that academic training was the only safe path. He studied at the USC School of Dramatic Arts before trying his luck at Los Angeles casting calls. His profile fit the classic actor mold that prefers silence to media noise.
In 2014, he landed his first real break on the series The Originals. He played a werewolf named Aiden, and his run on The CW lasted just fourteen episodes. But that job taught him how the machinery of long-running network television really works.
He was an effective supporting actor.
Woodell never rushed to headline posters. Between 2016 and 2018, he chained together brief appearances in productions such as Designated Survivor and Masters of Sex. These were roles with only a few lines that forced him to make every second on screen count so casting directors would notice him.
Horror and suspense gave him room to explore other registers. In 2018, he starred in Unfriended: Dark Web under the direction of Stephen Susco. The film was shot in an experimental way, and Woodell had to perform in front of a webcam for much of the runtime. It was an exercise in technical endurance that few actors of his generation would have accepted.
And the gamble paid off.
That same year, he took part in the television version of The Purge. He played Rick Betancourt across ten episodes and explored the moral tension of a character trapped in a night of legalized violence. So when Kaley Cuoco was looking for someone for the cast of The Flight Attendant in 2020, Woodell's name was already in the offices of HBO Max.
In 2022, Michael Bay cast him in Ambulance. Sharing the set with Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II demanded a level of physical intensity he had never experienced before. The production had a budget of $40 million, and Woodell played Scott Walker in a frantic chase through the streets of Los Angeles.
The real test came in 2023 with the premiere of The Continental. Woodell took on the challenge of playing the younger version of Winston Scott, the character that Ian McShane made famous in the John Wick franchise. He didn't try to imitate the voice or mannerisms of the veteran British actor; instead, he chose to build the origin of that cynical elegance from scratch.
Filming took place in Budapest and was divided into three long episodes. The series demanded constant fight choreography and impeccable costumes, which Woodell wore with a restraint unusual for an actor in his thirties. Yet the pressure of inheriting a role so tied to another performer didn't seem to affect him during the months of filming in Hungary.
He keeps a low profile away from the set.
His private life rarely makes headlines in the entertainment press. In 2023, he announced his engagement to actress Danielle Campbell after several years of a discreet relationship. He lives in Los Angeles and prefers to spend his free time on small theater projects rather than the party circuit of the film industry.
Production on his projects usually lasts between four and six months depending on the technical requirements of each platform.
