David Kim lives in San Jose, California, with his daughter Margot, a 16-year-old teenager. For years, the family has recorded and uploaded much of their everyday life online, so the film opens with those home videos shown on computer and cell phone screens. One night, Margot stops answering her father's texts and calls and does not come home. David raises the alarm, and the police open an investigation, but hours pass and the officers have no solid leads. David refuses to wait. He decides to search the one place nobody has checked yet: his daughter's laptop. Directed by Aneesh Chaganty and starring John Cho, the film follows every digital trace Margot leaves behind.
