Debra Messing arrived at NBC studios in 1998 under a contract she didn't want to sign. She had trained at the Tisch School of the Arts in New York, and her original plan didn't include the laugh track of a sitcom. But the script for Will & Grace changed her view of commercial television in an instant.
At the time, the industry was looking for fresh faces for prime time. Messing brought an unusual gift for physical comedy that recalled the great stars of Hollywood's golden age. During the show's first eight seasons, she earned six consecutive Golden Globe nominations.
Before becoming Grace Adler, she was a supporting actress on NYPD Blue. That experience on the police drama taught her the rhythm of television shoots before she hit massive stardom.
And the audience responded.
She took the lead role in the romantic comedy The Wedding Date in 2005 to test her box office appeal internationally. The film grossed more than 47 million dollars despite lukewarm reviews from the specialized press. That project confirmed that her name could carry a film without the help of an ensemble cast.
After her most famous run came to an end, she turned to projects with a different tone. In 2007 she starred in the miniseries The Starter Wife, playing a woman who must rebuild her life after a divorce in Hollywood. The production was such a hit that the network decided to turn it into a regular series a year later.
But the big bet came in 2012 with Smash. The series, produced by Steven Spielberg, went behind the scenes of Broadway through the creation of a musical about Marilyn Monroe. Messing played Julia Houston, a lyricist caught between her professional ambitions and a family life that was falling apart at times.
It was a risky bet.
Production on Smash cost roughly 7 million dollars per episode due to its original musical numbers. Despite being canceled after two seasons, the series kept a very loyal fan base that still champions its technical quality today. On this shoot, Messing proved she could handle much darker and more complex dramatic material.
Returning to Will & Grace in 2017 was no simple decision for the original cast. The actors negotiated salaries exceeding 250,000 dollars per episode to reprise their roles nearly a decade after the show's official finale. This new run lasted three additional seasons and definitively wrapped up the storylines in 2020.
In 2022 she decided to return to the Broadway stage in the play Birthday Candles. New York critics praised her ability to play the same character across several decades of life without leaving the stage. It was an exercise in physical and mental endurance that kept her away from cameras for several months.
In 2024 she appeared in the film Alto Knights, directed by Barry Levinson. In this crime drama about the New York mafia, she plays Bobbie Costello alongside Robert De Niro. The shoot required meticulous 1950s period detail and a complete shift in register from her previous television work.
The production had an estimated budget of 50 million dollars.
