Dan Harmon was fired from his own series in 2012. Sony Pictures Television decided that the creator of Community was too expensive a problem for NBC. But the story didn't end there, because his return a year later confirmed that chaos was the show's main engine.

The system completely broke down.

He was born in Milwaukee in 1973. His early days in the sketch group The Dead Alewives already revealed an obsessive fixation on narrative structure. That led him to design the Story Circle, an eight-step algorithm he applies to every script to ensure viewers receive an exact dose of catharsis.

This mathematical obsession didn't prevent his shoots from turning into a hell of delays and heavy drinking. Twenty-hour workdays were common at the Paramount studios. And that's where he forged his legend as an unmanageable genius.

The Explosion of Cynical Sci-Fi

In 2013, he premiered Rick and Morty alongside Justin Roiland. What started as a low-budget parody of the movie Back to the Future became the cornerstone of the Adult Swim network. The 70-episode contract signed in 2018 secured its financial survival for a decade.

The series changed how adult animation was understood. But Harmon didn't stop at others' success; he kept his podcast Harmontown as a form of public therapy. There, he confessed his personal and professional failures to thousands of followers.

He wasn't seeking redemption but transparency.

In 2023, he launched Krapopolis on Fox. It was the first animated production directly tied to the digital asset market. But critics focused more on its script about Greek mythology than on the technology surrounding it. The initial deal covered three seasons before the first episode aired.

Coming Full Circle

Working relationships with his collaborators have always been a minefield. In 2023, the production of Rick and Morty parted ways with Roiland after his legal troubles. Harmon took full creative control to maintain the consistency of the multiverse storyline.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2024, the Community movie project entered pre-production for the Peacock platform. Harmon keeps revising the script while the budget is adjusted to the schedules of a cast that is no longer cheap. Filming was finally scheduled for late that same year in Los Angeles.
