David Keith was born in Knoxville in 1954 and never quite fit the plastic-star mold that California was looking for. His physical presence was imposing, but his gaze conveyed a vulnerability that casting directors knew how to exploit from the very start.
In 1982, he played Sid Worley in An Officer and a Gentleman. That performance earned him two Golden Globe nominations and put him on the global industry map. But he wasn't seeking easy fame.
And the public believed him.
After his success, he signed on to star in The Lords of Discipline in 1983. In this film, he played a cadet at a suffocating military academy. David Keith preferred complex characters and military uniforms over the romantic comedies of the era.
It was his moment of greatest exposure.
In the mid-1980s, he decided that acting alone was not enough to understand the craft. In 1987, he stepped behind the camera to direct Children of the Corn (a rural horror film based on a story by Lovecraft). Critics were not especially kind to his directorial debut.
But David Keith didn't give up and returned to directing in 1988 with The New Adventures of Tennessee Buck. This time he also starred in the film. It was a personal project that blended adventure and humor in a tone few understood at the time.
The box office was relentless.
Despite his missteps as a director, his acting career remained solid thanks to his ability to command the screen. In 1990, he appeared in The Two Jakes under the direction of Jack Nicholson. The shoot was difficult, and the film suffered constant production delays.
As the 1990s arrived, his career shifted toward character roles in action productions and B-movie thrillers. David Keith took on very diverse challenges regardless of the budget. In 2000, he joined the cast of U-571, where he played Major Matthew Coonan.
The film grossed $127 million worldwide. This commercial success allowed him to keep working with major studios throughout the following decade.
In 2003, he appeared in Daredevil as Jack Murdock, the father of the lead character. It was a brief but essential role that set the emotional tone of the story. David Keith always knew how to bring dramatic weight in just a few minutes of screen time.
His television career has been steady and methodical. In 2011, he joined the cast of Hawaii 5.0 to play John McGarrett in several episodes. He wasn't chasing headlines but the steady career of a working entertainment professional.
His last credited appearance in a long-running production was in the series NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service during 2019.
