Rebecca De Mornay spent her adolescence fleeing across Europe with a mother who constantly changed identities. She attended a boarding school in Austria and learned German before mastering the technical English of Hollywood scripts. In 1981 she made her debut with a tiny role in One from the Heart because Francis Ford Coppola sensed something unsettling in her gaze.
Her real break came in 1983 with Risky Business. In the film, she played Lana, a sex worker who ends up setting up an improvised brothel in a teenager's house. The chemistry with Tom Cruise was so obvious that the relationship spilled off the screen for a couple of years.
Lana was not a conventional prostitute.
Audiences quickly typecast her in femme fatale roles, but she tried to break that mold with more restrained projects. In 1985 she appeared in The Journey of Natty Gann and Runaway Train. In the latter, she proved she could hold her own in a gritty, male-dominated setting without losing an ounce of authority.
So her name became forever linked to psychological suspense.
In 1992, her career took on a different temperature. She played Peyton Flanders in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and made half the world afraid to hire a nanny. Her performance was cold, calculated and free of the usual theatrics of the villains of the era.
The film grossed more than $88 million dollars in the United States alone. That success allowed her to choose projects with more freedom, but it also condemned her to a difficult professional maturity in a system that is unforgiving toward women as time passes.
During those same months of 1992, she had a romantic relationship with Leonard Cohen. It was no ordinary tabloid romance. She produced his album The Future and handled the art direction of several of his music videos. Cohen once said she was the most intelligent person he had ever met.
And the gamble paid off.
In the new century she turned to television and less commercial genre productions. In 2010 she took part in the remake of Mother's Day, where she once again tapped into that unsettling motherly side. Between 2015 and 2019, she played Dorothy Walker in the Marvel series Jessica Jones.
In 2024 she shot Peter Pan, Land of Forever under the direction of Ben Cook. In this film she plays Mrs. Darling and recaptures the air of classic elegance that has always set her apart from her contemporaries. She keeps working with complete discretion, far from the spotlight of the red carpets.
But the industry does not always know what to do with a woman who intimidates.
Rebecca De Mornay lives in Los Angeles and has two daughters from her relationship with radio host Patrick O’Neal. In 2025, her schedule includes appearances in independent projects whose international distribution has not yet been finalized. The contract for her latest production includes a confidentiality clause covering the final budget.
