Richard Wayne Van Dyke was born in Missouri in 1925 and never took professional dance classes before stepping onto Broadway. His elastic build was a genetic quirk that let him bend without breaking. In 1960 he landed the lead role in the musical Bye Bye Birdie despite his technical shortcomings.
He also won a Tony Award.
Television soon called on him to star in The Dick Van Dyke Show between 1961 and 1966. Carl Reiner wrote the script with a New York comedian in mind, but ended up with a guy from Illinois who mastered slapstick with surgical precision. The show avoided easy political jokes to focus on home and work dynamics.
In 1961, the actor was already earning star salaries while filming in black and white. But his big break came when Walt Disney saw him on stage and decided that man had to be the most famous chimney sweep in movie history.
The gamble paid off.
In 1964, Mary Poppins hit theaters and the world met Bert. British critics still poke fun at his cockney accent, but the film grossed 102 million dollars during its original release. Van Dyke played two roles in the movie (the chimney sweep and the elderly banker Mr. Dawes Senior) after personally pushing Disney for them and donating part of his salary.
But behind the permanent smile was a severe alcohol dependence that the actor hid for years. In 1974, he decided to break the taboo and starred in The Morning After. It was a TV movie in which he played a self-destructive alcoholic. It was his way of confessing to millions of viewers that he himself was fighting that disease in real life.
The industry put him through a few years of creative drought. Through the seventies and eighties he took on minor projects and variety specials that never quite caught on with audiences. So he turned to technology and 3D computer modeling (one of his hidden passions) while he waited for a better opportunity.
Success came back unexpectedly in 1993.
With Diagnosis: Murder, the actor found a comfortable refuge for eight seasons. He played Dr. Mark Sloan and shared the screen with his son Barry Van Dyke. The show was simple and predictable, yet it drew millions of viewers every week on CBS. The series stayed on the air until 2001.
In 2018, he returned to the Disney universe with Mary Poppins Returns to film a dance scene on top of a table. He was 92 years old at the time and refused to use a stunt double for the more physical parts. Set crew confirmed he completed three full takes of the choreography without showing excessive fatigue.
His longevity defies Hollywood statistics.
In 2023, he took part in The Masked Singer, becoming the oldest contestant in the show's history. A year later, in June 2024, Dick Van Dyke won a Daytime Emmy for his guest role on Days of Our Lives. He was exactly 98 years old on the day of the ceremony.
The actor still lives in Malibu and keeps up a three-day-a-week gym routine. In 2024, his estimated net worth topped 50 million dollars, thanks to syndication rights to his classic shows.
