Her Eastwood-directed debut

Donna Mills wasn't set on becoming the official villain of American television when she arrived in Los Angeles. In 1971 she played the stalked girlfriend in Play Misty for Me, and that role defined her image as a vulnerable blonde for nearly a decade. But the reality in Hollywood offices was different. She wanted to stop being the victim running through the woods.

And she pulled it off purely by breaking out of the mold.

Before that debut, she worked as a dancer and stage actress in Chicago. **Her technical training was impeccable**, and that allowed her to survive the seventies by moving from one series to another. But her petite frame and light eyes typecast her in supporting roles in procedural productions where she always needed rescuing by the hero of the week.

Because back then the industry didn't know what to do with a woman who wanted to take charge. So Mills bided her time while building up plenty of television experience. She appeared in shows such as The Love Boat or Fantasy Island, but always with the feeling that her talent for dark drama was going to waste.

Building the Perfect Villain

In 1980, she joined the cast of Knots Landing. The original script portrayed Abby Cunningham as an ordinary woman trying to find her place in a neighborhood community. Mills asked to meet with the producers to propose a drastic change to the character's psychology. She wanted Abby to be a social predator who used her intellect to dismantle marriages and businesses.

That change of direction saved the show from cancellation and kept it on the air for nine seasons in a row. Mills designed her own makeup and chose every piece of her wardrobe to project an image of total control. She understood that on 1980s television, style was a tool of power just as valid as dialogue.

The audience hated her immediately.

But that hatred translated into millions of viewers who kept her at the top until the end of the decade. Mills won three consecutive Soap Opera Digest Awards between 1986 and 1988 for this role. In 1989 she decided to leave production to found her own company and produce TV movies focused on social issues (such as child abuse or domestic violence).

Maturity, Emmys and Auteur Cinema

After a long break devoted to raising her adopted daughter, born in 1994, Mills returned to the set with a much more selective approach. In 2014 she accepted the role of Madeline Reeves on General Hospital. That job earned her an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in 2015. **Her ability to hold the camera's gaze** remained intact decades after her prime-time glory days.

In 2022, director Jordan Peele called her to appear in the film Nope. It was a brief but meaningful role in which Mills played Bonnie Clayton. Filming took place on a ranch in California under strict professional secrecy. She accepted the challenge because she wanted to work with the new generation of filmmakers who value the old-school style of acting.

It was a purely business decision.

In 2023, she appeared in the miniseries Dawn, playing Lillian Cutler. Her contract stipulated shooting days of no more than ten hours for the veteran cast. The production was filmed entirely on location in Vancouver with a tight budget by today's cable television standards.
