Joan Van Ark was the youngest student ever to enter the Yale School of Drama. She was barely eighteen when she set foot on the Connecticut campus after winning a scholarship many veterans would have killed for. That opportunity came from a personal interview with Mike Nichols and marked the start of a rigorous academic training.
In 1971 she received a Tony nomination for her role in the play The School for Scandal. New York theater was her natural habitat, and nothing suggested her face would become tied to 1980s pop culture on television. But the entertainment industry in the United States often has other plans for those who prove their strength on stage.
Television was not her absolute priority.
Before moving to Los Angeles, she worked in productions of Shakespeare and Molière. That technical foundation helped her survive an industry that devours names at an astonishing pace. In 1978 she accepted a supporting role in Dallas as Valene Ewing (Lucy's long-suffering mother). What was meant to be a two-episode appearance became a long-term contract.
The debut of Knots Landing in 1979 changed the game for her. The series began as an offshoot of the Ewing family's main storyline but soon developed its own identity, far rawer and less glamorous than its predecessor. Van Ark played Valene for 13 seasons and 344 episodes with almost no interruption.
And the gamble paid off.
Her character went through baby kidnappings, failed marriages and nervous breakdowns that kept twenty million viewers glued to the screen every week. She brought a nervous fragility that wasn't in the original script. Van Ark understood that melodrama only works if the actor truly believes in the tragedy they are portraying, no matter how absurd it may be.
In 1992 she decided to leave Seaview Circle. The actress felt Valene's story had run its course and wanted to regain control over her image and her schedule. But television's shadow is long, and producers kept calling her with projects that tried to recreate that homey magnetism.
During the 1990s she turned to voice work and low-budget TV movies. Her voice was heard in animated series such as Spider-Woman, and she took part in regional theater productions to stay active away from the Hollywood spotlight. That helped her avoid the oblivion that often punishes actresses of her generation.
In 2004 she joined the cast of The Young and the Restless. She played Gloria Abbott for more than fifty episodes and proved that her talent for daily drama was still sharp. Still, audiences always wanted to ask about her time on the Dallas spin-off (a phenomenon she accepted with a mix of resignation and gratitude).
The pace of work never really stopped.
In 2013 she briefly returned to the universe that made her famous, taking part in the revival of Dallas for the TNT network. It was an exercise in technical nostalgia that reunited her on screen with Ted Shackelford. It was one of her last major appearances on American broadcast television before she focused on smaller projects.
In 2019 she voiced a character in the series Doom Patrol, produced for DC's digital platform. Her part was recorded in a Los Angeles studio under the technical direction of Chris Manley. The production had a budget of 15 million dollars per episode.
