Eddie Izzard spent nearly a decade performing on the sidewalks of London before anyone bothered to pay admission to see them. Those years of street theater and juggling built a survival instinct that scripted comedy rarely allows. In 1993, the premiere of Live at the Ambassadors broke that cycle of anonymity in the West End.
The street was her real drama school.
Her style was never about the dry punchline. But her ability to ramble about European history or theology while wearing women's clothing confused an industry that still didn't know how to categorize boundary-pushing talent. In 1996, she won two Emmy Awards for her special Dress to Kill, which put to rest any doubts about her commercial viability in the United States.
Film was not a refuge but a testing ground. Izzard soon realized that his physique and voice worked best in characters who hid something beneath a surface of apparent normality. In 2004, he joined the cast of Ocean’s Twelve to play a security systems expert. He worked alongside Brad Pitt and George Clooney without ever trying to steal the spotlight.
And the strategy paid off.
Because that success led to projects with greater dramatic weight. In 2007, she starred in the series The Riches, in which she played a con artist posing as a resident of a wealthy area of Louisiana. The production, on the cable network FX, ran for two seasons and helped casting directors stop seeing Izzard solely as a successful monologist. She earned an Emmy nomination for this role in 2008.
During the 2020s, her personal life has made as many headlines as her acting work. In 2023, she announced that she preferred to be called Susie but would keep the name Eddie for her professional credits. That duality has not slowed her production pace at all.
That same year, 2023, she starred in Doctor Jekyll, a version that reimagined Robert Louis Stevenson's classic. The film focused on a restrained performance that avoided the histrionic excess common in other adaptations of the myth. She also appeared in the series Culprits for Disney Plus, playing a sinister character tied to the protagonists' criminal past.
And the gamble paid off.
Izzard continues to balance filming with grueling physical challenges, such as charity marathons. In 2024, production of her international projects was managed from her base in the United Kingdom under strict confidentiality agreements. Doctor Jekyll had an estimated budget of five million pounds sterling.
