Ellen Travolta was born in New Jersey in 1939. She is the eldest of six siblings and the first to decide that acting could be a way to make a living, long before the family name became a global brand. Her mother was an actress and her father sold tires. In that house, theater wasn't a distant dream but a daily routine.
And it worked.
By the mid-1970s, she was moving around Los Angeles sets with the confidence of someone who had known the craft since birth. She landed the role of Louisa Arcola in Happy Days, and suddenly her face was on millions of TV screens. But she wasn't chasing the mass stardom of her brother John.
She preferred the rhythm of sitcoms, where audiences connected with close-knit, noisy characters. She played the mother of Scott Baio in Joanie Loves Chachi and repeated that same dynamic in Charles in Charge for nearly five years.
That Italian mother label gave her financial stability. It was a smart decision, because it allowed her to choose projects without the pressure of paying rent at the end of the month. In 1978, she appeared as a waitress in Grease. It was a family touch in a production that changed the industry forever.
She earned the union minimum wage for that cameo of just a few seconds in the diner. But her presence validated her younger brother's rise on the big screen.
In 1994, she decided the Hollywood lights weighed too heavily on her and moved to Coeur d'Alene. There, she and her husband Jack Bannon founded a theater company that revitalized the area. She produced more than a dozen plays and made sure the regional theater reached a professional level.
Not everything was a success.
The death of Jack Bannon in 2017 brought her public activity to an abrupt halt. She spent months away from the spotlight, grieving privately at her home in Idaho. The silence lasted until family-friendly scripts started knocking on her door again.
She returned to the screen in 2020 with The Last Champion. It was a small role, but it proved her technique was still intact despite her time away from the spotlight. Hallmark signed her in 2022 for Haul out the Holly because they were looking for faces that conveyed pure nostalgia.
In 2023, she filmed the sequel Haul out the Holly: Lit Up under the direction of Maclain Nelson. Her character Mary became a recurring draw for the network during its December broadcasts.
The film was shot entirely in Utah over three weeks of grueling days under a sun that simulated snow with chemical polymers.
