Lee So-young chose her stage name because her face reminded people of cotton. In 2008, she won the TV show Check It Girl, and her face soon covered billboards all over Seoul. But modeling quickly felt too small for her, because she wanted more than posing in front of a still camera.
And then came the movies.
In 2010, she made her big-screen debut in Second Half. From that moment on, it was clear that her beauty did not fit the usual standards of commercial Korean productions. Her strong jawline and high cheekbones worked best on camera when she played women hiding secrets or dark intentions.
In 2014, she took the role that put her on the map with international critics. In Scarlet Innocence, she played a young woman obsessed with revenge in a raw story of desire and betrayal. The film grossed nearly three million dollars at the local box office and earned her several nominations at the Blue Dragon Film Awards.
Miso is the character who best defines her career so far. In the movie Microhabitat from 2017, she plays a woman who would rather spend her little money on cigarettes and whiskey than pay rent. It is a dry, unadorned performance that avoids easy tears.
No one else could have done it.
Jeon Go-woon's script demanded absolute restraint, which Esom handled with precision. In Korean cinema of that decade, it was rare to see a female lead so unconcerned with social conventions. The film was shot on an extremely tight budget and ended up winning the Seoul Film Critics Society award.
Despite her success on the independent circuit, she never left television. In 2021, she appeared in Taxi Driver, playing a prosecutor who seeks justice within a rotten system. The shooting pace of these series is exhausting, but she kept her technical composure in every action sequence.
In 2023, she took part in the Netflix production Kill Boksoon, playing the director of an agency of professional assassins. The role required an imposing physical presence opposite a legend like Jeon Do-yeon. But her riskiest project of that stage was the series LTNS from 2024.
In this series, she reunited with Ahn Jae-hong to play a couple who blackmail adulterers to survive. The show's tone shifts between dark comedy and the sharpest kind of marriage drama. Esom filmed the intimate scenes with a naturalness that broke the usual taboos of cable television in her country.
And the gamble paid off.
Her career choices tend to steer away from the romantic dramas that guarantee million-strong audiences. She prefers characters who live on the edges of society or who have a gray morality. That's why her name is now associated with a kind of cinema that doesn't need to ask permission to exist.
In 2024, her contract with the agency Management MMM included a exclusivity clause for auteur projects in the Asian market.
