Gi Ju-bong has the kind of face that seems to have lived every possible life on the Korean peninsula. He's not a poster-boy heartthrob. He's more the guy you run into in a Seoul tavern, drinking soju while trying to explain why theater is the only thing that matters.
His career took off in 1977 when he founded the theater company Michoo. It wasn't a strategic move to break into the screen, but a vital need for expression in a complex political climate. That dramatic foundation is what sustains every gesture he makes in front of the camera.
He's an animal on stage.
His film debut came in 1981 with The Last Witness. But don't expect a meteoric rise story. For decades, he worked as a trusted supporting actor in action films, rural dramas and low-budget thrillers. His name wasn't on the big posters, but his presence was the glue holding together scenes from directors like Park Chan-wook or Bong Joon-ho.
On the set of Joint Security Area (2000), he needed only a few scenes to give weight to his character. Because Gi Ju-bong understands that in film, less is always more. So he specialized in saying a lot while moving his facial muscles very little.
His professional relationship with director Hong Sang-soo permanently changed his career. In The Day He Arrives (2011), he proved he could hold extremely long shots while barely doing anything. But it was in 2018 that the international circuit realized who this man really was.
He won the Best Actor award at the Locarno Film Festival for his role in Hotel by the River. In the film, he plays a poet who senses his death is near and gathers his children at a hotel by the Han River. It was the first time a Korean actor won that award at the Swiss festival.
And the gamble paid off.
That recognition didn't soften him or push him toward easy commercial projects. He kept working with the same intensity, taking roles in student short films and big productions alike. In 2020, he appeared in The Woman Who Ran, keeping the everyday aesthetic he handles so well.
He doesn't seek the viewer's approval.
His working method is straightforward. Before shooting, he reads the script just once so as not to spoil the natural reactions he'll have with his fellow actors. He prefers the surprise of the live take. In 2022, he shot Walk Up, another collaboration with Hong Sang-soo, where wine and circular conversations once again sit at the center of everything.
Unlike other actors of his generation, he has never tried to hide the passage of time. His wrinkles are part of his tools of the trade. In 2023, he was seen in In Our Day, a film that reflects on life's simple pleasures, like eating noodles or playing with a cat. He conveys a melancholy that never feels heavy to the viewer.
The key to his longevity lies in his technical humility. He doesn't impose his vision on the director. He simply shows up and occupies the space with a naturalness that is almost unsettling by Hollywood standards.
In 2024, he appeared in A Traveler’s Needs alongside Isabelle Huppert. On this project, most of his scenes were done in a single take, with no prior rehearsals and dialogue that bordered on improvisation. The film wrapped its production with a budget of less than one hundred thousand euros.
