Brooklyn, 1986. A fourteen-year-old teen walks onto the set of The Cosby Show to play a recurring character named Paula.
That girl was Essence Atkins, and that was the start of a career that avoided the broken toys and focused on pure craft. In 1997 she joined Smart Guy to bring Yvette Henderson to life and proved she had the comic timing needed to hold her own against the genre's veterans.
Television was her natural habitat.
The truth is, she never lacked work on the major American networks. But her name really started to take off in 2002 when she starred in Half & Half as Dee Dee Thorne. The series ran for ninety-one episodes and gave her the leverage to negotiate far more ambitious contracts in the Los Angeles industry.
In 2010 she made the leap to Are We There Yet? alongside Terry Crews. On this production she didn't just act; she began to understand the ins and outs of executive producing so she could better control her public image. Because Atkins always knew that beauty in Hollywood fades fast without a financial strategy behind it.
Nobody handed her anything.
In 2017 she returned to sitcoms with Marlon. On this NBC series she played Ashley Wayne, and the show stayed on the air for two full seasons before being canceled in 2018. So she decided to explore less commercial territory so she wouldn't get typecast as the perfect sitcom mother.
But movies also came knocking with titles like A Haunted House in 2013 and its sequel in 2014. These horror spoofs grossed more than sixty million dollars at the global box office despite very tight budgets. Her name's box office pull was a sure bet for genre investors.
In 2021, she joined the cast of First Wives Club for BET+. There she worked alongside Jill Scott and Michelle Buteau in a story that explored divorce and sisterhood from an urban perspective. Filming for the third season took place in 2022 on a very demanding production schedule.
Atkins never chased red carpet glamour and constant flashbulbs. She always preferred steady paychecks and the consistency of daily shoots on closed studio sets.
In 2023 she took part in the ABC series The Company You Keep. In 2024 she shot several episodes of the fourth season of The Ms. Pat Show under director Mary Lou Belli.
