On March 30, 1955, a petite blonde woman walked onto the stage of the RKO Pantages Theatre to collect a golden statuette. It was her first film role. Nobody expected a thirty-year-old newcomer to steal the scene from Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront, but Elia Kazan knew exactly what he was doing when he cast her.
Saint came from live television and the Actors Studio classes. There she learned that emotional restraint works better than shouting or grand gestures. She won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for a role that blended fragility with an unexpected moral toughness.
And the gamble paid off.
That dazzling start was not a stroke of luck but the result of years of stage training. Yet in 1950s Hollywood, serious actresses usually got stuck in roles as professional long-suffering women. She broke out of that pattern early, because her gaze conveyed an intelligence that unsettled traditional producers.
Alfred Hitchcock disliked the gritty realism of the Method. Still, he wanted Eva Marie Saint for North by Northwest in 1959. The director demanded a total physical transformation to play Eve Kendall. He asked her to cut her hair and abandon her girl-next-door image to become a deadly spy.
Hitchcock personally supervised every dress bought at Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York. He wanted her to look like a marble statue. Her salary for this film came to 50,000 dollars at the time, and it marked her definitive entry into big-budget mainstream movies.
The chemistry with Cary Grant was electric, because she brought a maturity that the director's previous blondes lacked. But she never let herself be dazzled by the glare of the cameras.
She kept her home on the West Coast, far from tabloid scandals.
During the sixties she chose her projects with unusual calm. She took part in the epic Exodus in 1960 and in the drama Her Private Hell in 1962. So while other stars accepted any script to stay relevant, she preferred to space out her appearances so she could raise her children.
In 1986 she received an Emmy Award for her work in the television drama Love Is Never Silent. This honor confirmed that her ability to move audiences was still intact outside the big screen. Television also allowed her to explore mature women's roles that the films of that era systematically ignored.
Not everything was a resounding success.
In 2006 she played Martha Kent in Superman Returns under the direction of Bryan Singer. It was a brief role that served as the emotional anchor for the lead character. In 2014 she appeared in the film The Winter's Tale alongside Colin Farrell and voiced a character in the animated series The Legend of Korra between 2012 and 2014.
Her contract for the shoot of North by Northwest stipulated that she could keep all the wardrobe designed by Edith Head, valued at thousands of dollars.
