Florinda Meza García did not reach Mexican television by chance or through connections. She was born in Juchipila in 1949, was raised by her grandparents from an early age after her parents divorced, and quickly learned to earn her own living. She studied drama at the ANDA academy while typing documents in other people's offices to pay her tuition.
In 1969, Roberto Gómez Bolaños saw her perform in the sketches of La media naranja and didn't hesitate to sign her. He was looking for an actress with theatrical discipline who could keep up the physical rhythm of television comedy.
And the gamble paid off.
For more than two decades, her public image was locked in the apron and curlers of Doña Florinda in El Chavo del 8. Few viewers realized that the strict mother was actually a woman in her twenties made up to look old.
But the performer didn't limit herself to delivering lines in front of the Televisa cameras. In 1980 she began formally contributing to the scripts of Chespirito, and in 1983 she took on direct responsibilities in stage directing. She ended up writing dozens of scripts for the most-watched comedy show in the Spanish-speaking world while alternating between roles as different as La Popis and the toothless Chimoltrufia.
In film, she co-starred alongside the original cast in box-office hits such as El Chanfle in 1979 and its sequel in 1982. She also took on executive producing duties as traditional formats began to show audience fatigue.
In the nineties, Meza chose to step away from family comedy and compete in the most ruthless arena of San Ángel: prime-time telenovelas. She wrote and starred in Milagro y magia in 1991, an ambitious project that confused audiences used to classic melodrama.
His early stumble did not slow his ambition behind the camera. In 1995, she produced La dueña, a rural melodrama starring Angélica Rivera that smashed ratings in Mexico and among U.S. Hispanic audiences. The production reached a 40 percent audience share, an extraordinary result for a creator who had been pigeonholed in comic vaudeville formats.
Two years later, she produced Alguna vez tendremos alas in 1997. On that project she led the writing team, supervised camera direction and oversaw the final edit of every episode.
Nobody gave her a single credit in the production titles.
Commercial theater offered her the financial breathing room that television executives had begun to withhold. Between 1992 and 2008, she produced and co-starred in the stage comedy 11 y 12, which ran for more than 2,800 consecutive performances at the Teatro Libanés in Mexico City.
After Roberto Gómez Bolaños died in 2014, the actress was caught up in family legal battles and rights disputes over the creative catalog. For three decades her name was absent from the big screen until, in 2019, she accepted the role of a diva obsessed with cosmetic surgery in Dulce familia.
So she traveled to Chile to shoot under Nicolás López's direction on a strictly acting contract. The film wrapped its run in commercial cinemas in 2019 with 112.5 million Mexican pesos collected at the box office.
